Big Fourth Quarter Propels BC to Win in Home Opener

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (2-1) used a 22-7 fourth quarter to earn a 57-48 victory over Bob Jones University (2-3) in BC's home opener on Tuesday night at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

Graduate student Destiny Williams, the reigning USA South Conference Player of the Week, registered a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds.  Williams was one of three Tornados with double-figure scoring as sophomore Makenna Parkins poured in 14 points and senior Ty'She Washington added 10 points to go along with a game-high six assists.

Sophomore Chyna Pouncey pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds to lead all players on the glass. Parkins and senior Avery Lockwood each grabbed five rebounds, while freshman Lexi Shepard registered four boards and four assists.

The Tornados struggled offensively to start the game, missing their first seven shot attempts from the floor. BC would go on to shoot just 4-of-21 for the opening period as Bob Jones took a 15-12 lead at the end of the first.

The Bruins would outscore BC again in the second quarter to take a 30-25 lead at the intermission.

The third quarter proved to be a defensive battle with Bob Jones outscoring BC 11-10 in the stanza.

Trailing 41-35 entering the fourth quarter, Washington swiped back-to-back steals both leading to layups to put the Tornados within a point.

Minutes later, Parkins hit back-to-back three-pointers to give BC a 47-46 lead. Following a Parkins' rebound, Williams then followed with another three-pointer to add to the lead further.

A Pouncey three-pointer with just over two minutes left capped off an 11-0 scoring run for the Tornados who stormed ahead 55-46 en route to the victory.

As a team in the 22-7 fourth quarter, Brevard shot 8-of-15 (55%) while holding Bob Jones to a mere 1-of-11 (9%) shooting from the field.  The BC defense also forced nine Bruin turnovers in the final stanza.

Brevard returns to action with a road game at Agnes Scott on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Decatur, Georgia.  The game will mark the 2021-22 USA South Conference opener for the Tornados.
