BC Drops Tight Contest in Season-Opener

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (0-1) dropped its regular season-opener 60-57 to Greenville University (1-2) in a neutral-site affair on Friday night at the Barnes PE Center in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.

Graduate student Destiny Williams led the Tornados with a double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds.  Playing 34 minutes, Williams shot 8-of-16 from the field while also adding five steals, three assists and one block in the all-around performance.

Senior Ty'She Washington added 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go along with a game-high five assists.  Sophomore Chyna Pouncey gave the Tornados a third player in double figures with 10 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor, including two made three-pointers.

Brevard was aided by 16 bench points led by seven points by sophomore Makenna Parkins.

BC opened the game with a dominant first quarter that included a 13-0 start to the quarter capped off by a layup by Washington on an assist by Williams with 20 seconds remaining in the period. Greenville scored its only points of the quarter with just five seconds remaining in the stanza after a 0-for-13 shooting start from the field. In total, the BC defense held the Panthers scoreless for the opening 9:55 of the contest.

Greenville responded by outscoring the Tornados 16-13 in the second quarter to cut BC's advantage to 26-18 at the intermission.

After taking its largest lead at 34-18 with 7:16 to play in the third, Brevard outscored GU 20-18 for the period to take a 10-point advantage into the fourth.  The Panthers however came alive in the fourth quarter aided by a 10-0 run to tie the game at 49-49 with 3:52 remaining. Down the stretch, four made free throws in the final 75 seconds of the game sealed the win for Greenville.

BC shot 39% from the field with six three-pointers made.  Greenville shot 35% from the field, while having a huge day at the free throw line shooting 22-of-33 from the stripe.  BC only attempted seven free throws in the contest, converting three. The two teams were exactly even in the rebounding (35-35) and turnovers (24-24) categories.

Brevard returns to action on Saturday in another neutral site contest at Lookout Mountain, Georgia with a game vs. Berry College tipping off at 2 p.m.
