Women’s Basketball Competes in Exhibition at Division I Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team made its final preparations for the 2021-22 regular season on Monday evening, facing NCAA DI Furman University in an exhibition matchup.

The host Paladins took a 86-46 decision in the exhibition contest, as the result does not go against either teams record and statistics are not official.

Destiny Williams turned in an all-around performance for the Tornados in the exhibition tune-up, totaling 11 points with eight rebounds, eight steals, and four assists - leading all Tornados in rebounds, steals, and assists while tying the team lead in points.

Seeing her first action on the hardwood as a Tornado, Aysha Short logged 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 mark at the free throw line. Avery Lockwood added eight points, while Shakirah Thompson added six points on a pair of 3-pointers made.

Furman used a 42% shooting performance from the field (28-of-67) and a 44% mark from distance (8-of-18) to help propel itself to victory. The Paladins forced 30 Brevard turnovers, capitalizing with 42 points-off-turnovers, and out-rebounded the Tornados, 55-25.

The Paladins led wire-to-wire in the exhibition, holding the advantage from the 9:03 mark in the first quarter onward. With the score 13-5 in favor of Furman with 6:18 left in the first period, the Paladins put together a 13-0 scoring run that pushed their lead to a 26-5 margin. The Paladins carried that momentum onward in the second quarter, as Furman took a 47-19 lead into the break.

Furman narrowly outscored the Tornados in the second half, as Brevard continued to battle and hang with the Paladins before the hosts closed out the 86-46 exhibition win.

The Tornados will begin their regular season at Mountaintop Madness, a tournament hosted by Covenant College. Brevard opens up play on Friday at 6 p.m. against Greenville University before closing out tournament play on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Berry College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
