^Defending Division Champion

Piedmont University was selected as the preseason favorites in the West Division, while NC Wesleyan College garnered the top spot in the East. The Lions received 61 points and five first-place votes to finish ahead of defending West Division Tournament Champion Maryville College, who earned 54 points and one first-place vote. Berea College (49 points, three first-place votes) took the third spot, while LaGrange College was picked fourth with 42 points.

Covenant College (5th, 37 points) and Huntingdon College (6th, 31 points) finished just ahead of the Tornados, who earned 27 points in the tabulation.

The Tornados are coming off a 2020-21 campaign in which the program qualified for its first postseason in its entire NCAA era, as Brevard earned the four-seed in the 2021 USA South Women's Basketball West Division Tournament.  Under the direction of sixth-year Head Coach Donald Hudson and first-year Assistant Coach Annalee Bollinger, Brevard returns a majority of its 2021-22 roster, including 2020-21 USA South All-Conference West Division Second Team selection Destiny Williams alongside a strong class of six newcomers. Williams led BC in the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season, averaging 18 points-per-game while grabbing a team-high 7.5 rebounds-per-game and totaling 3.6 steals-per-game – a mark that ranked top-10 nationally a season ago.
