BC Edged by NC Wesleyan in Extra Innings

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team (6-18, 2-10 USAS) was edged 3-2 in extra innings by host N.C. Wesleyan (25-11, 10-4 USAS) in the second game of a USA South Conference doubleheader on Sunday in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.  Prior to the extra-inning thriller, N.C. Wesleyan blanked Brevard 11-0 in game one of the twin bill.

GAME TWO - N.C. WESLEYAN 3, BREVARD 2 (8 inn.)

Brevard bounced back from its defeat in game one of the doubleheader with a come-from-behind performance to send game two into extra-innings.

Brevard starting pitcher Grace Reynolds threw a career-long 7.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on ten hits.  Morgan Aycock was the winning pitcher for NCWU, allowing one earned run on three hits with nine strikeouts in eight innings en route to the complete game victory.

The Battling Bishops jumped ahead with an early lead on an RBI single in the first inning.  Reynolds and the BC defense then blanked the hosts in the next two innings before an RBI triple in the fourth have NCWU a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Tornados mounted a comeback which began with senior Beth Hyatt reaching base on an error.  With two outs, left fielder Karley Queen produced a single to move Hyatt to second.  A wild pitch followed to move Queen and Hyatt to second and third.  Senior catcher Serena Rodgers-Luckey then delivered a clutch 2-out, 2-RBI single to score both base runners and tie up the contest at 2-2.

The Battling Bishops looked to retake the lead, with two runners aboard with no outs.  Reynolds was able to escape the jam, forcing a pop-up to Rodgers-Luckey and a ground out to senior shortstop Mikayla Morgan to strand the two runners.

Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning to force extra innings.  The Tornados were unable to produce a run in the top of the eighth.  N.C. Wesleyan then loaded the bases and scored on a hit-by-pitch to take the 3-2 win in the bottom of the eighth inning.

GAME ONE - N.C. WESLEYAN 11, BREVARD 0 (5 inn.)

N.C. Wesleyan won game one of the doubleheader via the run rule, recording 11 runs on 10 hits.

Starting pitcher Emily Humphrey earned the win for NCWU, while Abby Delp, Lindsey Tolle and Kennedy Fennel each saw action in the circle for the Tornados.

Queen and freshman second baseman Ivelysse Leighton registered the only hits, both singles, in the contest for the Tornados.  Makayla Simmons hit a home run to go along with four RBIs to lead the offensive charge for the Battling Bishops.

NCWU scored three runs in the first, five in the second and three in the fourth en route to the victory.

Brevard will return to USA South Conference action on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Greensboro College.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
