Tornados Drop Pair to Meredith in Home Conference Opener

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team (4-10, 1-3 USAS) dropped two games to Meredith (10-10, 2-0 USAS), 12-0 and 9-0, in BC's first USA South Conference home games of the year on Tuesday afternoon at the BC Softball Field. The doubleheader had originally been scheduled for Saturday, March 25 but was postponed due to inclement weather.

Game One - Meredith 12, Brevard 0 (5 innings)

Meredith used a big eight-run third inning to propel the Avenging Angels to a 12-0 run-rule victory in game one of the doubleheader.

Brevard managed two hits as shortstop Mikayla Morgan and third baseman/second baseman Gabby Hooper each singled.  Morgan also stole a base for the Tornados.

Meredith starting pitcher Lillie Davis went five shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks, while striking out four.  Emilee Lewis led the charge for Meredith offensively with a 3-for-3 performance with three RBIs.

Lindsey Tolle started the game for the Tornados and retired the Avenging Angels 1-2-3 in the top of the first on two ground outs and a pop-up.  Morgan then opened the bottom of the first with a base hit to left-center field.  The senior shortstop stole second, however, was caught stealing at third to end the early BC threat.

Meredith followed with three runs in the top of the second, then exploded with eight runs in the third.  A 12th run came home in the fourth inning as the Avenging Angels maintained their cushion through the fifth to take the victory.

BC committed two errors in the game, resulting in three unearned runs on the ledger of pitcher Abby Delp (2-6).

Game Two - Meredith 9, Brevard 0 (5 innings)

The Avenging Angels took the second game of the doubleheader as well in five innings, shutting out BC while scoring nine runs on 10 hits offensively.  Brevard was plagued by four errors in the contest.

Hooper, left fielder Karley Queen, and right fielder Jasmine Webb each registered hits for Brevard.  Hooper recorded a double, her third of the season and the lone extra-base hit of the day for the Tornados.

Starting pitcher Hannah Weigle (3-5) earned the win for Meredith, allowing no runs on three hits, while striking out five and walking one in a complete five innings pitched.

Grace Reynolds (2-3) started in the circle for BC with freshman Kennedy Fennell pitched the fifth inning, allowing a run on one hit.

Meredith jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then was retired 1-2-3 in the second inning by Reynolds and the Tornado defense.  With two outs in the bottom of the second, Hooper doubled to left field, yet was left stranded on the basepaths.

The Avenging Angels added two runs in the third, three in the fourth, and another insurance run in the fifth to take the win.

Brevard will return to action on Friday with a USA South Conference road trip at Mary Baldwin in Staunton, Virginia.  The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
