Tornados and Bruins Split Doubleheader Behind Reynolds’ Complete Game Performance

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team (3-5) split a non-conference doubleheader against Carolina University (4-10) on Saturday afternoon at the BC Softball Field.

Brevard fell 14-3 in the first game before bouncing back in game number two, claiming a 7-2 triumph to earn the split of the twin bill.

GAME TWO - BREVARD 7, CAROLINA UNIV. 2

Grace Reynolds (1-1) earned her first victory of the season with a complete game performance, as the sophomore from Troy, North Carolina went seven innings allowing just five hits and one earned run while fanning five Bruin batters.

Mikayla Morgan and Sara Barnes each turned in 2-for-3 performances to pace the Tornado offense in the second contest, as eight different Tornados logged hits in the 10-hit outing for the team.

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the second, Morgan found a hole in the left side of the infield, and heads-up baserunning on a fielding error from the Bruin outfield gave BC an early 2-0 advantage. Just two batters later, Sara Barnes doubled down the left-field line to give Brevard a 4-0 cushion early.

The Bruins were able to muster a pair of scores in the top of the fourth to trim the deficit to a 4-2 margin, but Brevard scored one run in the bottom half of the frame coupled with a pair of insurance scores in the bottom of the sixth to give BC a five-run edge, 7-2. Reynolds wrapped up her complete-game effort as the Tornados salvaged the doubleheader split.

GAME ONE - CAROLINA UNIV. 14, BREVARD 3

The Bruins set the tone early, taking advantage of BC errors in the top of the first to build a 4-0 advantage.

Both sides traded runs in the second frame but the Bruins opened the game up in the top of the fourth with three more scores to make it an 8-1 ballgame. Morgan used an RBI double to keep hope alive for Brevard in the bottom of the sixth trailing 10-3, but four more runs in the top of the seventh from the visitors sealed Brevard's fate in the front end of the DH, 14-3.

Morgan's 2-for-4 performance that included her second career home run - a solo shot - highlighted the offense for BC in game one as the visitors racked up 14 runs on 14 hits and five Tornado errors.

Brevard and Carolina University conclude their season series on Monday, March 20 as the Tornados visit Winston-Salem, North Carolina to conclude the home-and-home set with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
