Delp Pitches Gem as Tornados Split Pair at Triangle Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team (2-4) split a pair of non-conference games at the Triangle Softball Classic held Saturday in Raleigh, North Carolina.  BC defeated Huntingdon (11-3) in the first of the two matchups behind a sensational pitching performance by sophomore Abby Delp en route to a 2-0 victory.  In the second game of the day, BC fell to Averett (3-1) by a score of 10-2.

GAME ONE - BREVARD 2, HUNTINGDON 0

Delp (2-2) received the assignment as the starting pitcher for the Tornados and delivered a superb performance in the first game of the day.  The native of Waxhaw, North Carolina pitched a complete-game shutout victory, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts and just one walk.  Throwing 91 pitches with 60 for strikes, Delp did not allow an extra-base hit to keep the Huntingdon offense at bay throughout the contest.

Brevard's defense came up big as well, committing zero errors.  Delp and the BC defense combined for two 1-2-3 innings and came up with a caught stealing off the arm of sophomore catcher Olivia Martinez.

After two scoreless innings, Brevard broke through in the bottom of the third with the only scoring of the contest.  Third baseman Gabby Hooper led off the frame with a walk which was followed by a single by senior left fielder Beth Hyatt.  After a Huntingdon pitching change, shortstop Mikayla Morgan put the ball in play to drive home Hooper on a fielder's choice.  Hyatt then reached third on a wild pitch, then scored on an RBI single by designated player KateLynn Olive to give BC an insurance run.

Hyatt went 1-for-2 with a run scored, while Morgan and Olive each registered RBIs.  A Martinez double provided another offensive highlight for the Tornados.

GAME TWO - AVERETT 10, BREVARD 2 (5 INNINGS)

After a scoreless opening inning, Brevard fell behind 5-0 in the bottom of the second. Relief pitcher Grace Reynolds and the BC defense produced a 1-2-3 third inning to slow down Averett.  However, the Cougars scored three more runs on a home run in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead.

Brevard was down to its final three outs in the top of the fifth due to a potential run-rule scenario.  The Tornado offense came through to at least temporarily extend the game with two runs in the frame.

Hooper walked to open the inning, then advanced to
second on a single by Hyatt.  A Morgan groundout advanced Hooper to third who then scored on a wild pitch.  Olive followed with her second RBI of the day with a single to score Hyatt.

Averett though responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth to ultimately take the run-rule win.

In the circle, Lindsey Tolle started the game for BC with Reynolds and Kennedy Fennell making relief appearances.

Brevard will return to action on Saturday, March 18 with a home doubleheader vs. Carolina University starting at 1 p.m. at the BC Softball Field.
