Berea Takes Two from Tornados in Kentucky

BEREA, Ky. - The Brevard College softball team (6-17, 2-10 USAS) dropped both games of a USA South Conference road doubleheader to host Berea College (12-17, 5-9 USAS) on Saturday afternoon in Berea, Kentucky.

The Mountaineers won game one of the doubleheader 3-2, followed by a 4-1 victory over the Tornados in the second game.

Game One - Berea 3, Brevard 2

Graduate third baseman Emily White, the nation's leader in batting average entering the weekend, went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. First baseman Autumn Lollis hit an RBI double and catcher Taylor Hannah doubled as well.

Freshman Abby Delp started in the circle for the Tornados and allowed two runs in five hits over five innings to the Mountaineer hitters.  Junior Lindsey Tolle pitched one inning of relief.

Brevard jumped on host Berea early with two runs in the top of the first inning to open play in the doubleheader.  Senior centerfielder Jocelyn Folkers singled with one out, then advanced to second on a base hit by White.  Shortstop Mikayla Morgan then gave Brevard its third consecutive single on a play that also resulted in an error as Folkers came around for a score.  Lollis followed with a timely sacrifice bunt and RBI to score White and give the Tornados a 2-0 lead.

The score remained 2-0 as Delp and the Tornado defense shut out the Berea offense through the next four innings. The Mountaineers however were able to get on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Trailing 2-1, Berea then registered the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 advantage.

White hit a double in the top of the seventh, however, the Brevard offense was unable to answer with an equalizer as Berea cemented the 3-2 victory.

Game Two - Berea 4, Brevard 1

Hannah went 2-3 with a run scored as the only Tornado with a multiple-hit game in the second contest.  White and Folkers each doubled in game two as well for the Tornados.

Senior Kaitlynn Farmer was the starting pitcher for Brevard and pitched a complete six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.

Host Berea never trailed in the second game of the doubleheader.  The Mountaineers scored two runs in the first inning, then added two more scores in the fourth.

Brevard generated its lone run in the sixth as Hannah reached base with a one-out single. Folkers promptly drove home Hannah with an RBI double to cut the deficit to three runs.

Berea though was able to retire the Tornados for the game's remaining six outs to clinch the doubleheader sweep.

Brevard returns to action this Wednesday with a conference doubleheader vs. Maryville.  First pitch for the opening game of the midweek doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the BC Softball Field.
