BC Earns First Conference Wins of 2022 with Offensive Explosion

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team (6-11, 2-0 USAS) scored a combined 32 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Agnes Scott (4-18, 0-6 USAS) in its USA South Conference home opener on Saturday at the BC Softball Field.

Brevard came-from-behind with 12 unanswered runs in the late innings to take a 16-9 victory in game one, then dominated for a 16-1 run-rule win in game two.

Over the two games, BC totaled a whopping 32 runs on 32 hits with nine doubles and three triples.

Game One - Brevard 16, Agnes Scott 9

After a scoreless first inning, Agnes Scott jumped out to a 3-0 in the top of the second to take an early advantage.  The Tornados then battled back with two runs in the third produced by a two-RBI double by senior centerfielder Jocelyn Folkers. The very next frame, Brevard took its first lead of the contest with two runs in the fourth on an RBI-double by right fielder Beth Hyatt that score Savannah Jones followed by an RBI-single by Folkers to score designated player Olivia Martinez.

The 4-3 lead for the Tornados did not last long however as the Scotties put together an impressive six-run frame in the top of the fifth to take a 9-4 lead.

Trailing by five runs, BC chipped away at the big deficit with a two-run bottom of the fifth.  Left fielder Brittany Franks hit an RBI-single that scored Mikayla Morgan.  In the next at bat, Hyatt then delivered an RBI on a ground out to score Autumn Lollis and cut the deficit to three.

Senior starting pitcher Kaitlynn Farmer shut out Agnes Scott with a 1-2-3 frame in the top of the sixth to keep the deficit manageable for the Tornado hitters.

The BC bats exploded with a ten-run bottom of the sixth that featured eight hits, three doubles, a triple, and a total of 15 Tornados coming to the plate.  Morgan singlehandedly hit a double and triple with two RBI's in the inning with White also blasting a 3-RBI single to the left field wall.  Lollis hit an RBI-double to cap off the decisive inning to go along with RBI's from Martinez, Hyatt and Taylor Hannah as well.

Farmer and the BC defense then shut out the Scotties in the top of the seventh. The Tornados turned a beautiful double play followed by a Farmer strikeout to seal the first conference win of the season.

Farmer (3-5), who started the game then was later re-entered for the game's final two innings, went a total of 3.2 innings allowing just two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks.  Lindsey Tolle and Grace Reynolds each saw action in the game's middle innings in relief of Farmer.

In total, BC registered a season-high 18 hits and seven extra-base hits in the contest.

Folkers (3-for-4, 3 RBI's), Morgan (3-for-5, 3 RS; 2 RBI's), Lollis (3-5, 2 RS) and Hyatt (3-for-4, 3 RBI's, 2 RS) all registered three-hit games.  White (2-5, 3 RBI's, 2 RS) and Franks (2-for-3, 2 RBI's) each had multiple hit and multiple RBI performances as well.

Game Two - Brevard 16, Agnes Scott 1

Brevard matched its scoring season-high by tallying an identical 16 runs in game two.  BC used an 11-run first inning and a three-run second inning to take a 14-0 lead.  Combined with the 12-0 scoring run in the end of game one, the Tornados put together an electric 26-0 scoring outburst over a four-inning span.

Freshman starting pitcher Abby Delp (2-2) earned the win, pitching a complete five innings allowing just one unearned run and one hit.

After a slick double play from Delp to Morgan to Lollis in the top of the first, the BC bats went back to work in the bottom of the opening stanza.

Hannah opened the inning with a triple to left field, then came home on a passed ball to begin the scoring onslaught.  The runs continued to pour in throughout the frame as the Tornados brought 16 batters to the plate.  Lollis registered a total of four RBI's in the inning on a single and a double. Franks and Folkers delivered RBI-singles, while White blasted an RBI-double.

Ahead 11-0, Hyatt scored a run on a Agnes Scott error followed by another double by White that scored Hannah. A sacrifice fly by Morgan then scored Folkers to give BC 14 runs.

After an unearned run by Agnes Scott in the top of the third, RBI singles by Hyatt and White rounded out the 16-run scoring output by the Tornados.

Folkers (3-for-3, 4 RS, 2 RBI's) and White (3-for-3, 3 RBI's and 2 RS) again posted big totals to lead BC offensively.  Lollis and Jones also put together two-hit games with Lollis registering a career-high four RBI's.
