Tornados Advance to Semifinals on Penalty Kicks in Thriller at Home

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men's soccer team (10-5-3) advanced to the semifinals of the 2022 USA South Conference Men's Soccer Tournament after drawing in double-overtime with Greensboro College (4-8-6) through 110 minutes of regulation and overtime. Brevard outlasted Greensboro 4-3 in penalties to advance.

Luis dos Santos, Rodrigo Garcia, Ryan Lynch, and Sam O'Callaghan made the first four penalty kicks, while freshman goalkeeper Justin Rivest, who was substituted on for penalties, stopped Greensboro's fifth and final PK try to send the Tornados to the semifinals.

Matheus Rossi, a freshman goalkeeper from Victoria, E.S., Brazil who is the reigning USA South Defender of the Week, made five saves while shutting out the Pride over the course of 110 minutes. The performance marked the second time in six days that Rossi and the Tornado defense shut out Greensboro, as Brevard earned a 1-0 victory over the Pride last Wednesday in the penultimate game of the regular season.

Brevard heavily outshot the visitors throughout the match, totaling 27 shots to GC's 11, as the Tornados recorded 18 second-half shots while limiting the Pride to just two attempts at goal. However, the score remained scoreless through regulation, sending the match to be decided in a pair of 10-minute overtime periods. Greensboro recorded four shots while blanking BC in overtime, but neither side found a goal as the contest was decided in PKs. Brevard took seven corner kicks to Greensboro's three, while six total cautions were issued alongside 20 foul calls.

Lynch, the leading goal and point-scorer in the USA South Conference throughout the regular season, searched for goal throughout the match as the junior forward from Charlotte, North Carolina totaled 11 shots with eight shots on target. Francesco Bonometti added four shot attempts with three on-goal, while Igor da Silva logged three shot attempts. Dos Santos, Garcia, and O'Callaghan all attempted two shots apiece.

Greensboro goalkeeper Lee Carrico kept BC off of the scoresheet throughout the match, putting forth an impressive effort with 16 saves. The Pride logged 11 shot attempts in the match, as Collin Thomas totaled seven shots with five reaching target. Jovan Cotton, Nate Gordon, and Isaac Haddock all made penalties for the Pride, however, Luis Cazarin-Plazola's attempt went wide right before Thomas' strike was saved by BC's Rivest, as the Tornados advanced on in the tournament.

Brevard will travel to Rocky Mount, North Carolina on Thursday, as the Tornados match up with top-seeded NC Wesleyan University. Kickoff for the semifinal bout is set for 3 p.m.
