Lynch’s Last-Minute Goal Pushes Tornados Past Owls

BREVARD, N.C. - Junior forward Ryan Lynch received a cross into the box from freshman midfielder Caue dos Santos and headed the ball towards the far post, beating the goalkeeper with just 22 seconds left to play as the Brevard College men's soccer team (9-4-1) dropped Warren Wilson College (2-10-2) in the final minute, 1-0, on Wednesday night at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

The late winner was Lynch's 11th of the 2022 season, adding onto his NCAA-era record total that he set earlier in the season, with the assist from dos Santos being the second of his young career for the Americana, Brazil product.

The victory for Brevard is a well-deserved one, as the Tornados took a total of 33 shots in the contest while only allowing the Owls to take three attempts at goal. The 33-shot total is a season-high for Brevard, surpassing its previous mark of 32 set at Southern Virginia earlier in the season.

Matheus Rossi (9-4-1) earned the shutout victory, only being tested with three shot attempts from the visitors with none of them finding the target.

Warren Wilson's Parker Davis did all he could to keep the Tornados out of the goal, making 13 saves on the evening to keep the affair scoreless through a majority of the match.

Lynch took a team-high nine shot attempts himself, with five finding the goal. Daniel Morgan added six shot attempts and three on-target, while Estevan Berto and Francesco Bonometti each took four shots apiece to lead BC's attacking efforts.

In addition to its high shot total, BC also took nine corner kicks in the contest. Twenty-three of Brevard's 33 shot attempts came in the second half as BC sent a flurry of shots off in an attempt to break the scoreless tie.

The winner would come within the final 30 seconds of action, as dos Santos controlled the ball on the near side of the field and looked at his options for a cross into the box. The freshman midfielder whipped the ball in, and it found the head of Lynch, who directed it towards the far post to beat Davis and send the home crowd off happy, as the attempt nestled into the back of the net as the Tornados claimed the one-goal win.

Brevard returns to USA South Conference play on Saturday with a trip to Fayetteville, North Carolina to take on Methodist University at 3 p.m.
