Tornados Take 2-0 Win vs. Asbury to Win Fifth Consecutive Match

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's soccer team (5-3) used impressive defense and a pair of goals to earn a 2-0 non-conference victory over Asbury University (2-4-3) on Wednesday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field. The match marked Brevard's fifth-straight victory and fourth shutout in its last five matches.

Junior defender Igor da Silva and back-to-back USA South Player of the Week honoree Ryan Lynch supplied the two scores for Brevard, with Caue dos Santos assisting on Lynch's last-minute goal. Freshman goalkeeper Matheus Rossi (5-3) earned his fifth win and fourth overall shutout in a 90-minute clean sheet for the Victoria, E.S., Brazil native.

The shot total was even with each side logging seven shot attempts. Brevard made three saves defensively and took five corner kicks, while the Eagles led the foul count 15-12.

After stifling Asbury over the game's first 20 minutes, Brevard's first chance came on a cross that found Luis dos Santos, but the senior's shot attempt went to the right of goal. Just a minute later, Sam O'Callaghan played the ball to Lynch who put in a high looping cross. Asbury attempted to clear the ball, but the clearance found the feet of da Silva, who ripped in a left-footed shot into the right-hand corner of the goal to give Brevard the 1-0 lead.

Each side was called offside a few times in the first half, thwarting any further chances at goal as the score remained 1-0 at the halftime intermission.

BC had a prime chance to double its advantage in the 47th minute of action when Filipe Tchoulkov ripped a shot into the right side of the goal, but the attempt was denied by Asbury's Collin McKibben.

The Tornados were called offside three more times before Caue dos Santos took BC's next shot attempt in the 62nd minute. AU took three more shots including an attempt that was saved by Rossi, but were unable to muster much offensive firepower down the stretch of the contest. In the 90th minute of play, Caue dos Santos found Lynch near the top of the penalty box, and the two-time USA South Player of the Week ripped a shot that hit underneath the crossbar and ricocheted into the goal, doubling Brevard's lead and clinching the victory, 2-0.

The Tornados open conference play on Saturday at Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Virginia at 3 p.m. Brevard returns home next Wednesday, October 5 at 7 p.m. against Johnson & Wales (NC).
