Tornados Take Down Berea in Home-Opener for Fourth-Straight Win

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's soccer team (4-3) defeated non-conference foe Berea College (4-2-2) 3-0 in BC's home opener on Wednesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.  It marked the fourth consecutive victory for Brevard with a winning streak dating back to September 10. The Tornados have outscored their opponents 9-2 over the course of the winning streak.

Ryan Lynch, the reigning USA South Player of the Week, scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Tornados. The junior forward from Charlotte, North Carolina now has totaled 12 points with five goals and two assists on the season.

Brevard opened the scoring in the early going with a goal by Lynch on a free kick opportunity in the eighth minute.  From just outside the penalty box, Lynch placed a direct kick into the upper right corner to give the Nados an immediate 1-0 lead.

Just 11 minutes later, Lynch struck again with his second goal of the evening to give BC a 2-0 advantage.  Junior midfielder Estevan Berto set up his teammate with a beautiful assist which Lynch then slotted past Berea's goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Ahead 2-0, Brevard added an insurance goal in the 24th minute as junior Sam O'Callaghan scored the third goal of the match with a well-placed ball into the bottom left corner.  Lynch provided the assist on the goal by O'Callaghan to give him a fifth point having been involved in each of the game's first three goals.

The score remained 3-0 for the remainder of the first half as well as the entire second stanza.

Three different Tornado goalkeepers saw action en route to the shutout, the third of the season for BC. Freshman Matheus Rossi (4-3) started the match and logged 31 minutes before handing the reigns over to freshman Justin Rivest. Paul Bienefeld, a freshman goalkeeper from Mainz, Germany, entered in the second half and finished off the match.

BC's defense, led by starters O'Callaghan, Rocco Barbon, Tom Dussauge and Igor da Silva, held off several Berea attacks to protect the net even further.

In total, Brevard outshot the Mountaineers 17-10.  In the second half, Berea upped its offense pressure yet remained scoreless despite firing off six shots.

Brevard returns to action with the penultimate non-conference match of the season vs. Asbury on Wednesday, September 28 at 4 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

BC will then open USA South Conference play at Southern Virginia on October 1 in Buena Vista, Virginia.   Following the non-conference finale vs. Johnson & Wales at home on October 5 and a trip to conference opponent Mary Baldwin, the home conference opener is set for Wednesday, October 12 vs. Pfeiffer.
