Tornados Fall on Road to Stormy Petrels in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Brevard College men's soccer team (0-3) dropped its third consecutive match to open the season, falling 2-0 to Oglethorpe University (1-1-1) on Wednesday night in Atlanta.

Oglethorpe scored its first goal in the 24th minute before doubling its advantage in the second half while the Tornados played a man down for the second time in the early season after a red card was issued.

Junior forward Ryan Lynch logged both of BC's shot attempts - including one that hit off the crossbar - in his regular season debut. Starting goalkeeper and reigning USA South Defender of the Week Matheus Rossi (0-3) made four saves.

The Stormy Petrels were able to control the contest from the onset, totaling 13 shots while limiting the Tornados to only four shot attempts, as Oglethorpe put eight shots on target. The hosts controlled five corner kicks, while BC was hampered by five yellow cards and a red.

Oglethorpe broke through in the 24th minute, after a shot off a corner kick was saved by Rossi but the rebound was put into the back of the net. Brevard was able to win two corner kicks in the later stages of the first half, but failed to create any meaningful chances at goal was the Stormy Petrels took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Brevard's Estevan Berto was shown a yellow card in the 50th minute before Lars Houtriet was flashed his second yellow of the game in the 52nd minute, sending him off the field as BC played with 10 men for the remainder of the match. Just seven minutes later, Oglethorpe doubled its lead on a free kick following a Brevard foul.

The Stormy Petrels pushed its advantage to a 3-0 margin in the 83rd minute on a penalty kick after a foul in the box, effectively wrapping the contest up as the hosts clinched the non-conference win.

Brevard will look to get into the win column on Saturday as the Tornados make a trip to Greenville, South Carolina to face Bob Jones University at 8 p.m.
