BREVARD, N.C. – Despite outshooting Maryville 27-2 and controlling six corner kicks to MC's three, the Brevard College men's soccer team (7-3-3, 1-2-2 USAS) fell in heartbreaking fashion, 2-1, to Maryville College (11-2-1, 4-0-1 USAS) on a cool and windy Saturday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Prior to kickoff, Brevard honored its six seniors – Antonio Ferreira, David Garrett, Jack Pruehs, Greg Sellers, Jose Vela, and Juan Martin Ycaza – in a special presentation.

BC fell despite a whopping 27-2 advantage in shots. Wendel Lima and Ryan Lynch led all players with six shots apiece, while Estevan Berto and Facundo Sunhary logged three shot attempts each.

Vitor Braga scored the lone goal for the Tornados on a Tino Onetto assist following a saved shot attempt from the foot of Lima that was spilled by the Maryville keeper. The goal marked the second for Braga of the Fall 2021 season.

Although limited in offensive chances, Maryville was able to make the most of its opportunities, scoring two goals while only attempting two shots all evening. MC first took the lead, 1-0, following an own goal by the Tornado defense. After the Tornados were able to equalize on Braga's 43rd-minute score, Maryville retook the lead as Austin Vinyard poked in a Craig McIlwraith through ball to give the visitors a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.

Maryville took the lead in the fourth minute on the own-goal before the Tornados established its offensive footing, firing away a total of 10 shot attempts before its 11th – Braga's score – tied the contest just before halftime. Maryville's Ndubueze Henry fired a free-kick on frame that was saved by BC's Thiago Leopardi, marking MC's first shot of the match as the two sides went into the intermission all square at 1-1.

Offensive opportunities proved plentiful for the Tornados, as BC racked up five shot attempts through the first 10 minutes of action in the second half. However, it was Maryville who broke through in the 56th minute as Vinyard stayed onside and poked a ball that crept into the left-side of goal.

BC racked up 11 shots and three corner kicks down the stretch, with its biggest scoring chance coming in the 89th minute as Lynch took a shot that was turned away point-blank by Maryville's Mykal Manfred, as the Scots held on for the conference win, 2-1.

The Tornados will close out home action next Wednesday at 5 p.m. vs. Johnson & Wales – Charlotte before wrapping up the regular season next Saturday at LaGrange at 3 p.m.
