Men’s Soccer Draws Even with Huntingdon in Conference Opener

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men's soccer team (4-1-2, 0-0-1 USAS) battled through 110 minutes, drawing with Huntingdon College (4-4-1, 0-0-1 USAS), 1-1, on Saturday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field. Senior forward Adam Spencer scored the lone goal for the Tornados with Igor da Silva and Ryan Sinkamba registering assists on the goal.

The Tornados drew with the Hawks despite dominating the possession with a 32-9 shot advantage while winning a whopping 16 corner kicks compared to Huntingdon's one.

Huntingdon's Joshua Burton turned in an impressive performance to keep the Tornados out of the back of the net for 85-plus minutes after BC's first goal of the match, logging 15 saves. Senior keeper Jack Pruehs (3-1-1) stopped six Huntingdon shots to keep the draw intact.

Estevan Berto led all Tornado shot takers with eight shot attempts, while Ryan Lynch (six), Wendel Lima (five), Sinkamba (four), Facundo Sunhary (three), Rocco Barbon (two), and Sam O'Callaghan (two) all took multiple shot attempts in the match.

Spencer's team-leading fourth goal of the season came in the 24th minute of action as da Silva played Sinkamba through on the right side of the box before the sophomore midfielder whipped the ball in to Spencer who was streaking forward towards the empty side of goal. The Mooresville, North Carolina product slotted the ball home on the left side of the goal with his head, giving BC the early 1-0 advantage.

With just under three minutes remaining in the half, a BC foul in the Huntingdon box caused a penalty kick to be awarded to the visiting Hawks, as Cristo Rocha was picked as the penalty taker. Rocha rifled a shot into the lower-right corner of the goal just past a diving Pruehs, tying the contest at 1-1 right before halftime.

BC searched hard for the go-ahead goal, outshooting Huntingdon 16-5 in the second stanza. However, Burton was up to the task, turning away 11 BC shot attempts to keep the score deadlocked at a goal apiece, forcing sudden-death overtime.

Brevard only managed a lone Lima shot attempt in the first overtime period before Lynch and Sunhary fired off a pair of shots in overtime number two, but the Hawks escaped as the two sides opened up USA South Conference action with the 1-1 draw.

The Tornados will be back in action on Wednesday, September 29, as BC heads to Misenheimer, North Carolina for a non-conference meeting with Pfeiffer University at 6 p.m.
