ATLANTA, Ga. - The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (2-2) outscored Oglethorpe University (4-4), 5-3 in the second half, but the Stormy Petrels used a big first half to propel themselves to a 10-7 victory over the Tornados on a rainy Thursday evening in Atlanta, Georgia.
Graduate attacker Parker Corbett and sophomore midfielder Finnegan McCormack each logged two goals apiece, while Gage Khayat, Henry Konsker, and Andrew McDonald also found the back of the net for the Tornado offense. Konsker and Drew Pond dished out assists, while McDonald grabbed a team-high six ground balls. Goalkeeper Jack Hicks made 10 saves for the Tornados.
Oglethorpe was led by Jazz Washington, who scored four goals, while Jeremiah James added three goals as the pair combined for seven of the hosts' 10 goals. OU's Carson Van Note went 14-for-16 on faceoff attempts and grabbed a game-high eight ground balls, while Addison Irwin saved 14 shots.
Each side let 35 shots fly apiece, and each side was neck-and-neck in ground balls and turnovers. BC's biggest disadvantages came on faceoffs (5-for-21) and on man-up opportunities (2-for-11).
Oglethorpe was able to control the first quarter, as Washington scored the game's first two goals with Jones adding the third, as Oglethorpe found itself up 3-0 just under five minutes into the contest. BC's defense settled in as the Stormy Petrels took a three-goal lead into the second period.
Corbett got Brevard on the board just 50 seconds into the second stanza, as each side traded a pair of goals. Oglethorpe closed the half by scoring three-consecutive goals as the hosts took a five-goal advantage, 7-2, into the intermission.
Brevard outscored the hosts 3-1 in the third quarter as Corbett, Khayat, and McCormack all found the back of the net as the deficit was trimmed to three goals, 8-5, with one quarter remaining.
Washington capped off his four-goal performance with a pair of goals in the first portions of the fourth period, as the Tornados answered with a rally of two goals but the effort proved too late as Oglethorpe pulled away for the three-goal victory, 10-7.
Brevard returns home to kick off a three-game home stand that begins on Tuesday, March 7 against Guilford College at 2 p.m. on Ives-Lemel Family Field.
