FERRUM, Va. - The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (1-1) fell 9-4 to host Ferrum College (1-1) on Sunday in Ferrum, Virginia. The defeat gave the Tornados a split in their season-opening road trip after defeating Randolph College 7-3 on Friday.
Four different Tornados scored in the contest with goals coming from Parker Corbett, Finnegan McCormick, Andrew McDonald, and Drew Pond. McDonald also registered two assists.
Scott Bundy started and played the entire game in goal for Brevard, recording 13 saves.
Ferrum scored three quick goals to open the contest. Down 3-0, a goal by Pond followed by a score from McDonald with just 12 seconds remaining cut the deficit to one goal at the end of the first quarter.
The Panthers then outscored BC 3-0 in the second period to take a 6-2 lead into intermission.
BC came out of the break with a big third quarter, shutting out the Panthers while producing two goals on the offensive end. Capitalizing on a man-up opportunity, Corbett scored with just minutes into the period on an assist by McDonald. Less than three minutes later, McCormick found the back of the net to cut Ferrum's lead to 6-4.
Neither team would score for the final eight minutes of the third quarter. However, a Panther goal just 35 seconds into the fourth stretched the lead to three goals. Two more insurance goals came later in the period to secure the win for the home team.
Ferrum outshot Brevard 42-26 which included a 27-12 shot advantage in the first half. BC came out of intermission with an active third quarter, outshooting the hosts 11-3 in the period. Ferrum however regained the upper hand with a 12-3 shooting edge in the fourth period.
Ferrum registered 34 ground balls, compared to 22 by Brevard. The hosts also won 14 of the game's 17 faceoffs.
Brevard returns to action with its 2023 home opener on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field vs. non-conference foe Spalding.
