BREVARD, N.C. – Sophomore guard Kavan Horton was named as the USA South Conference Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week after helping the Tornados to a 2-1 week in conference action.
Horton, a sophomore from Asheville, North Carolina, averaged 9.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.3 steals as the Tornados went 2-1 last week against USA South foes. In a 74-72 win over Greensboro, Horton scored six points with nine rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block. In a 77-72 victory over Methodist, Horton totaled nine points, six rebounds, three assists, and one block. Finally, in a 74-68, overtime, loss to N.C. Wesleyan, Horton contributed 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Horton, who is playing in his first season of collegiate basketball in 2022-23, is averaging 7.7 points per game with a 43% mark from the field and a team-high 4.1 rebounds-per-contest mark. The sophomore has hauled in five or more rebounds in eight of BC's last nine contests.
Horton's award gives Brevard College a grand total of 30 weekly awards from the USA South so far in 2022-23.
