Brevard Holds On for Pivotal Conference Win at Southern Virginia, 71-68

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Brevard College men's basketball team (7-14, 3-7 USA South) picked up a critical road victory against Southern Virginia University (11-10, 4-6 USAS), 71-68, on Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista, Virginia.

Freshman forward Jadon Carnes, the reigning USA South Rookie of the Week, enjoyed another stellar performance individually scoring 18 points on a highly efficient 9-of-12 mark from the field with five rebounds as well. Senior guard Quincy Carter added 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting and a team-high three made 3-pointers, while LB Boyette poured in 14 points with five assists and two made 3-pointers off the bench. Junior guard Charles Reed scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds, while Kavan Horton led all Tornados with seven boards.

SVU was paced by a pair of 20-plus point scorers, with Shaun Kenedy totaling 27 points with 12 made field goals. Koa Baker scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Dane Ibsen added nine boards off the bench.

Brevard shot at a 49% clip from the field to SVU's 38% mark and the Tornados hit seven 3-pointers in the contest. SVU held a 39-29 rebounding edge, but the Tornados distributed the ball efficiently with a 21-7 edge in the assist department. BC scored 18 points off 10 SVU turnovers and the Tornado bench contributed 23 of its 71 points in the game.

Each side held up to a double-digit lead at some point in the contest, with the Tornados holding a 10-point lead midway through the second half while SVU started hot, taking a 12-point advantage through the game's first five minutes.

The hosts started on a 12-0 run before BC answered by scoring 16 of the next 22 points as the Tornados drew within two, 18-16, with 7:49 left in the first half. SVU opened back up a nine-point edge 29-20 before buckets from Boyette and Garrett Sutherland cut the halftime deficit to five points, 29-24.

Each team's offenses woke up in the second half as Brevard put up 47 points to SVU's 39. The Tornados took a four-point lead following a 12-2 run capped by a Carter 3-pointer at the 16:50 mark. Brevard held a five-point advantage with 11:55 left before Boyette's first three of the contest pushed the edge to eight, 52-44. BC held a game-high 10-point lead as Boyette drained his second long-range bucket of the contest, making the score 58-48 with 10 minutes left to play.

SVU was able to chip their way back, tying the contest twice. A bucket by Carnes, two jumpers from Carter and a Boyette made free throw gave BC a seven-point cushion, 67-60, with just over three minutes left to play. The Tornados held off a late rally from the Knights, who cut the deficit to one point with 28 seconds remaining, as a pair of Carter free throws and a defensive stop sealed BC's third conference win of the season.

The Tornados gear up for a busy week of action at home next week, as BC competes in three home contests in a span of six days. Brevard first plays host to Greensboro College at the Boshamer Gymnasium on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
