Brevard Drops Home Conference Affair to Mary Baldwin

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men's basketball team (6-14, 2-7 USAS) fell 91-71 in USA South Conference action to visiting Mary Baldwin University (10-9, 5-3 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

Freshman Jadon Carnes scored a career-high 25 points on 12-of-15 shooting to lead the Tornados.  Carnes has now scored in double figure in three consecutive games, shooting 25-of-31 (81%) from the field over the stretch  The native of Concord, North Carolina also pulled down a career-best six rebounds and dished out two assists in Saturday's effort.

Senior guard Quincy Carter also scored in double figures with 12 points and a team-best three 3-pointers made to go along with three assists.  Junior Charles Reed led the team with seven rebounds while recording three steals and two assists.  Sophomore guard Kavan Horton registered a career-high four steals in addition to his seven points and three assists.

Mary Baldwin was led by guard Jaden Ignacio who posted 20 points with a game-high four 3-pointers.  MBU's Brandon Stoudamire scored 19 points off the bench on 8-of-11 shooting.  Starting guard Quentin Hart also scored in double figures with 16 points to add to the winning tally.

Carnes opened the game's scoring with a made jumper followed by a 3-pointer by Carter to give the Tornados a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of play.  MBU then took its first lead of the contest on a made 3-pointer by Carnes to go ahead 9-8 as part of an 11-4 scoring run.  A few minutes later, a 14-2 MBU run followed to stretch the lead to 17 points. The Fighting Squirrels cruised into halftime from there, outscoring BC 56-31 in the opening half on 64% shooting from the field and nine made 3-pointers.

Brevard outscored Mary Baldwin 40-35 in the second half with Carnes leading the way by producing 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the final stanza.  In total, BC had ten players finding the scoring column in the second half.

MBU outshot BC 56% to 41% for the game and made 11 3-pointers.  The charity stripe also favored Mary Baldwin which hit 14-of-16 from the line, compared to 8-of-12 free throws made by Brevard.

Fifteen different Tornados saw action in the contest, while 16 MBU players saw the court.  The Fighting Squirrels outscored BC in bench points by a margin of 34-17. 

Brevard will return to USA South Conference play with a road trip to Buena Vista, Virginia to take on Southern Virginia on Saturday, February 4 at 2 p.m.   The next home game for the BC men's basketball team is Tuesday, February 7 vs. Greensboro College at 7 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
