Pacers Edge Tornados 82-78 in Tight USA South Battle

BREVARD, N.C. - Senior guard Quincy Carter scored a team-high 19 points, including 14 in the second half to help mount a comeback attempt, but the Brevard College men's basketball team (6-12, 2-6 USA South) fell in a close 82-78 matchup to William Peace University (12-6, 7-1 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

Carter, a senior from Decatur, Georgia, scored 19 points off the bench as one of four Tornados to reach double figures. Jadon Carnes added 13 points on a 5-of-7 mark from the field, while Carson Evans scored 13 points on a 5-of-8 mark. Kavan Horton pitched in 11 points with a team-best five rebounds and three assists off the bench as well, as Charles Reed and Garrett Sutherland each totaled seven points apiece. 

WPU was led by a pair of 25-point scorers, as Michael Dulin totaled 25 points on a 9-of-14 mark from the field and a game-best 6-of-9 performance from long range. Timothy Pettiford added 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field while also hauling in a team-high seven rebounds. Beau Bryant posted an 11-point, six-rebound performance. 

William Peace was hot shooting throughout the contest, hitting 31-of-55 (56%) from the field. Brevard also hit its shots at an efficient clip, knocking in 30-of-61 (49%). Each team made 10 3-point buckets as the Pacers held the percentage advantage, while rebounds were nearly even and each side committed single-digit turnover totals. Each side scored 36 points in the paint, but Brevard's bench held a sizeable scoring edge 32-14. 

The first four minutes of the first half were tight before WPU opened up an eight-point lead, 18-10, at the 13:45 mark of the first half. Brevard was able to cut the deficit down to three, 26-23, after a Carter layup with 8:56 remaining in the first half. The Pacers were able to close the first period on a 10-4 stretch to take a nine-point advantage into halftime, 36-27. Carnes, Carter, Horton, and Reed each had scored five points each at the intermission. 

The hot-shooting Pacers opened up a 13-point  margin 58-45 midway through the second stanza. WPU held a 76-66 lead with four minutes left before the Tornados mounted their comeback. Sutherland hit a layup before a big Carter 3-pointer with 3:19 remaining. WPU extended the lead back out to seven before a Carter three and a pair of Carnes free throws made it a two-point contest, 80-78, with 26 seconds left to play. William Peace's Malachi Borders made a pair of clutch free throws to seal the contest up, as the Pacers escaped with a four-point win, 82-78. 

The Tornados hit the road for a rematch with Pfeiffer University on Tuesday, January 24 at 7 p.m. in Misenheimer, North Carolina.
