Tornados Drop Conference Opener in Tight Road Affair

STAUNTON, Va. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (4-8, 0-1 USAS) dropped its USA South Conference opener 84-77 to host Mary Baldwin University (6-6, 1-0 USAS) on Wednesday afternoon in Staunton, Virginia.  The tight contest featured nine tied scores and four lead changes.

Senior guard Quincy Carter led the Tornados with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Carter also went 6-of-8 from the free throw line as 14 of his points came in the second half.  In addition, the native of Decatur, Georgia added five rebounds and three assists.

In total, all 11 BC players who saw the court found the scoring column with 25 points coming off the bench.  Junior forward Sly White led all the Tornado reserves with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, including two made three-pointers.  Guard Charles Reed came off the bench to play 30 minutes en route to six points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals.

The game started as a tight back-and-forth with Mary Baldwin taking an 11-8 lead after five minutes.  BC then rattled off an 11-0 run capped off by a three-pointer by White.  MBU responded with an 11-1 run to tie the game at 20-20 until another three-ball by White put the Tornados back ahead.

The Tornados put together an 8-0 scoring run late in the first half to take BC's largest lead of the contest at 35-26 as guard Carson Evans drilled a three-pointer to notch a nine-point lead.

Mary Baldwin responded once again with a 10-2 run to close out the half, yet BC held onto a 37-36 advantage heading into the intermission.

The second half featured several more ties and lead changes. Knotted up at 56-56 with just over nine minutes to play, MBU took the lead which the hosts kept for the rest of the contest.

A three-pointer by sophomore Garrett Sutherland cut the deficit to 68-67 with under four minutes to play.  Mary Baldwin however pulled ahead again and continued to maintain the lead to take the 84-77 victory.

BC outshot MBU 55% to 46% from the field.  Mary Baldwin made 12 more free throws and capitalized on a 27-13 advantage in points-off-turnovers.

The Brevard College men's basketball team will return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. with its home conference opener vs. Southern Virginia at the Boshamer Gymnasium.  The game will precede a Brevard women's basketball USA South matchup vs. Methodist set for 4 p.m.
