Postseason Preview: Tornados Compete in First Postseason Since 2015, Match Up with Scots

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (8-15) is set to compete in the program's first postseason since 2015, as the fourth-seeded Tornados head to Lookout Mountain, Georgia to face off against West Division top-seed Covenant College on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the 2022 USA South Men's Basketball Tournament.

The Tornados clinched the program's first postseason berth in seven years by virtue of a thrilling road victory last Tuesday in Demorest, Georgia, as Brevard dropped Piedmont University by a final of 61-57 to put BC in the driver's seat for a postseason berth. The win gave the Tornados men's basketball program its most single-season victories since Brevard won 12 games en route to a South Atlantic Conference tournament bid in the 2014-15 season.

Sophomore guard Carson Evans turned in an impressive all-around performance, scoring a career-high 16 points while also grabbing seven rebounds and totaling three assists and three steals. Chancey Watson also scored in double figures in what was a productive day for the Tornado bench, as Watson logged 11 points and nine rebounds while making a team-best three 3-pointers. Quincy Carter added nine points, while Alex Wesig totaled three steals.

Overall in 2021-22, BC's offense has been led by LB Boyette's 12.1 points-per-game, while Wesig has reached double-figures in scoring average with 10.3. Boyette and Charles Reed are BC's leading rebounders, while Quincy Carter and Wesig have the team lead in steals-per-game.

Brevard's defense is top-half in the USA South in steals, averaging 8.3 per contest. BC's team-first mantra is on display, as the Tornados are top-five in the USA South in assists-per-game (14.1).

Covenant has been paced by three double-digit scorers, led by former All-American Will Crumly who has totaled 16.9 ppg and 7.9 rpg. Chris Barnette has averaged 14.2 ppg, with Promise Igbanu totaling 10.1 ppg.

Covenant was able to take the first meeting of the season series at home, as the Scots used a late first-half run to position itself for the victory, 86-54. The Scots visited Boshamer Gymnasium on February 12, in an eerily-similar contest that saw the visitors use a big 16-3 run at the end of the first half to take a double-digit lead that would last for the duration of the contest in the 83-58 final, as the Tornados look to turn the tide in game number three.

The winner of Tuesday's matchup will face the victor in the East division 2-3 matchup between no. 3 Pfeiffer and no. 2 NC Wesleyan.
