Tornados Come Up Short vs. Scots

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (7-14, 4-6 USAS) fell 83-58 to visiting Covenant (14-6, 9-2 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

Freshman Garrett Sutherland led the Tornados in the defeat as the only BC player in double-figures with 11 points in 21 minutes off the bench. It marked the second consecutive double-digit scoring performance for the native of Atlanta who scored a career-high 12 points on Friday in a win over Huntingdon.

Senior Alex Wesig led BC on the glass with seven rebounds, while also dishing out a team-high four assists. 

Four Scots scored in double figures to lead the Covenant attack as Will Crumly posted a game-high 20 points with 16 of his points coming in the first half.

Brevard played Covenant tight for the first ten minutes, taking the lead 15-14 on a made free throw by Sutherland.  The Scots however would pull away to take a 10-point lead 31-21 with 4:14 remaining in the first half. The lead grew even further with a 7-0 run over the final two minutes of the opening stanza as the Scots took a 41-23 lead in halftime.

The Scots kept BC at bay throughout the second half as well, outscoring the home team 42-35 to take the conference win.

Covenant outshot BC 52% to 34% from the field. The Scots made 12 3-pointers, while BC struggled beyond the arc shooting just 21% from three. Both teams shot nearly identical from the free throw line with the Scots shooting 15-of-21 and BC going 15-of-20 from the stripe.

Brevard returns to action with a critical USA South Conference West Division clash with Piedmont University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Demorest, Georgia.  BC then will host Senior Day, on Saturday, Feb. 19 vs. LaGrange College at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
