Piedmont Uses Second Half Run to Get Past Tornados on Tuesday

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (4-11, 2-3 USAS) dropped a USA South Conference matchup to Piedmont University (7-8, 2-1 USAS), 73-54, on Tuesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium. 

Both sides went into halftime deadlocked at 32-32 before the Lions outscored the Tornados 41-22 en route to the victory. 

LB Boyette scored a team-high 14 points with a pair of 3-pointers made and six free throws. Quincy Carter also reached double figures with 10 points and a career-high six steals to lead Brevard's defensive efforts. Garrett Sutherland came off the BC bench to contribute nine points on three made 3-point jumpers. 

Piedmont's Jordan Foote led all scorers with a 32-point performance that included an impressive 14-of-17 mark from the field. Logan Cranford added 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting. 

Piedmont shot an impressively high 62% from the field while making 39% of its 3-point attempts. The Lions were able to hold the edge on the boards, 32-20, while BC's defense forced 19 Piedmont turnovers. Piedmont scored 25 points-off-turnovers and scored 38 points in the paint. 

The first half proved to be a back-and-forth stanza, with neither side able to grab a large margin over the other. There were two ties in the first five minutes of play, and a Sutherland 3-pointer tied the contest back up at 15-15 with 12:04 left in the first half. 

Piedmont jumped back out to a five-point lead, 22-17, and again at 27-22, but the Tornados were able to knot the game back up at a 30-30 score with 1:56 left in the half after a Carter layup. The score would remain tied at 32-32 heading into the locker rooms. 

Carter swiped all six of his steals in the first half of play, while Boyette had a team-high nine points at the intermission. 

After six lead changes and three tied scores within the first three-plus minutes of the second half, Piedmont was able to take a lead it would not relinquish at the 16:47 mark. With the score 42-41, the Lions would put together a 12-0 scoring run to take a 13-point advantage with 11:50 left to play. Piedmont would extend the lead further, leading by as many as 22 points while riding its hot shooting to a 73-54 conference win. 

Brevard embarks on a two-game road trip this weekend when the Tornados travel to Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday to face Huntingdon College at 3 p.m. ET, followed by a Sunday showdown in LaGrange, Georgia against LaGrange College tipping off at 1 p.m.
