Tornados Take Conference Win at Berea

BEREA, Ky. – The Brevard College men's basketball team (4-10, 2-2 USAS) went on the road Saturday afternoon and took a 69-67 win over USA South Conference rival Berea (4-10, 0-3 USAS) in Berea, Kentucky.

Sophomore LB Boyette led the Tornados with 19 points, shooting 6-of-7 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.  The native of Charlotte, North Carolina also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds to go along with three assists and a steal. 

Senior Alex Wesig and junior Chancey Watson scored in double figures as well, each registering 10 points.  Wesig hit two 3-pointers, while also dishing out a team-best five assists.  Watson came off the bench, hitting three bombs from beyond the arc.

Freshman Garrett Sutherland also came off the bench to score eight points, while junior guard Quincy Carter added eight points and four assists.

Berea was led by Trey Minter with 23 points and Kevion Hudson who recorded 19 points. 

Brevard led most of the first half and held onto a 26-23 lead with 4:37 to  play before intermission.  A layup by Sutherland off an assist by senior center Luke Bleynat began a 14=3 run to close out the first half.  

In the first half, Brevard shot 57% while protecting the basketball with just four turnovers.  Ball movement was strong in the stanza as well with the Tornados recording assists on 12 of their 17 made field goals.

After Brevard took a 59-43 lead on a made 3-pointer by Watson, the host Mountaineers went on a 18-1 scoring run midway through the second half to take a 61-60 lead with 4:44 to play.  After several tied scores, Watson struck again with a 3-pointer with 1:36 to play to give the Tornados a 67-64 lead.  Two free throws by Boyette gave Brevard a 69-64 lead as the Tornados were able to hold off Berea down the stretch and secure their second conference win of the season.

Brevard made nine 3-pointers in the contest, while holding Berea to just 3-of-18 (16.7%) from beyond the arc.  As a team from the field, the Tornados shot a 51% field goal percentage on 26-of-51 shooting to mark the third time this season Brevard has shot over 50% in a contest.  The host Mountaineers shot 25-of-55 (45.5) from the field.

Brevard returns to action with its first home contest of the 2022 calendar year when the Tornados host conference foe Piedmont University on Tuesday with tip off set for 7 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
