MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Junior guard Quincy Carter totaled a career-best 18 points, but the Brevard College men's basketball team (3-9, 1-1 USAS) dropped its first USA South contest of the season against nationally-ranked No. 18 Maryville College (12-1, 2-0 USAS) on Friday evening.

Carter, a native of Decatur, Georgia, racked up 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field while also dishing out three assists. The outing was the fifth double-digit scoring output for Carter this season.

LB Boyette added 11 points and six rebounds, while Alex Wesig totaled 10 points and a team-high four assists.

Maryville was also led by a trio of double-digit scorers, as Jekobe Coleman and Myles Rasnick each scored 18 points, while Chase Ridenour added 14 points to contribute to the Scots' 98-point effort.

The Scots were able to slightly outshoot the Tornados from the field, 51% to 47%, but held a 33% to 16% advantage from beyond the arc while hitting 20 free throws. The Scots turned 16 Brevard free throws into 23 points-off-turnovers, while the Tornados outscored Maryville in the paint, 46-42.

The contest began with both sides trading 3-pointers before a 9-0 run saw the Scots take a 12-3 lead at the 16:05 mark. Brevard cut the lead to eight points, 18-10, after a Garrett Sutherland layup, but Maryville used an 11-0 run to extend its lead to double-digits for the remainder of the half. With the score 50-21 in favor of the hosts, Brevard was able to outscore the Scots 16-6 down the stretch, cutting the Maryville lead to a 56-37 margin at the intermission.

Carter totaled 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the first half, while Boyette added six points and five boards.

With the score 66-47 with 15:13 left to play, BC was able to chip away, using a 7-0 run to cut the Maryville lead to 12 points. That margin proved to be as close as Brevard would come in the second half, as the nationally-ranked Scots kept the margin in double-figures for the remainder of the contest, ultimately claiming a 98-74 victory.

Brevard is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, January 18 with a road trip to Lookout Mountain, Georgia to take on Covenant College at 7:30 p.m.
