Tornados Fall in Tight Matchup in Raleigh to Pacers

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (3-8) fell 66-60 to William Peace University (4-5) on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest. 

Alex Wesig totaled a team-high 17 points alongside six rebounds, going 7-for-13 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Quincy Carter added 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting and three 3-pointers made, with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. 

Smith Gupton scored a game-best 21 points off the bench for the Pacers, while Donnolly Tyrell Jr. added 12 points in reserve action. 

Brevard was able to narrowly outshoot the Pacers 39% to 36% from the field while scoring 40 points in the paint. The Pacers hit eight 3-pointers and narrowly out-rebounded the Tornados, 41-37. 

Brevard jumped out to the early lead, leading by as many as a game-high 10 points, 19-9, at the 10:54 mark in the first half. William Peace used a 12-0 run to take a 21-19 lead capped off with a Dulin 3-pointer, as both sides jockeyed for position through the remainder of the half. BC was able to hold onto a one-point margin, 30-29, as the contest went into the second half of play. 

Wesig led all scorers with 11 points at the intermission with three rebounds, while Carter added 10 points with four boards and two steals. 

Both teams went back and forth through the first seven minutes of the second half before a Pacer three gave the hosts the lead for good, 42-41, with 13:19 left to play. Brevard kept the score within a four point margin until the six-minute mark when the Pacers extended their advantage to a six-point margin, 58-52. A Garrett Sutherland layup with 25 seconds left cut the WPU lead to just three points, 61-58, but the Pacers pulled away outscoring the Tornados 5-2 down the stretch to clinch the six-point victory, 66-60. 

BC is back in action on Tuesday, January 18 when the Tornados return to USA South Conference play in Lookout Mountain, Georgia against Covenant College at 7:30 p.m.
