Tornados Compete in Exhibition at UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Brevard College men's basketball team faced local WNC-area institution UNC Asheville (1-1) on Thursday evening at Kimmel Arena, falling by a final of 101-44 in a matchup that counted as an exhibition for the Tornados.

LB Boyette and Chancey Watson each posted 11-point outings, as Boyette added three steals and shot 4-of-7 from the field including a 2-of-4 mark from long distance. Watson logged a team-best six rebounds to go alongside a pair of assists and steals. Quincy Carter tallied six points and three steals to help pace the Tornados.

The host Bulldogs had six double-figure scorers, led by Coty Jude who scored 16 points and drained four 3-pointers. Taijon Jones added 15 points and a game-high five 3-pointers made.

UNCA was able to shoot 52.5% from the field and an efficient 45.9% from distance, while holding a 46-31 rebounding advantage. Brevard totaled eight steals and scored 16 points-off-turnovers.

The Tornados were able to take a pair of leads, 2-1 and 4-3, after a pair of David Sealy free throws and a Carter fastbreak layup with 17:58 in the first half. BC kept it close with a Carter pull-up jumper, as the Bulldogs held an 8-6 lead at the 15:15 remaining in the half, but a 13-2 scoring run gave UNCA its first double-digit lead, 21-8.

Carter and Boyette led the Tornados with six points apiece in the first period, while Sealy added five and Watson posted four points. Watson led the boards with three rebounds, while Boyette and Carter each swiped a pair of steals.

UNCA doubled BC's score, 56-23, in the second half, while using a 62.1% shooting performance from the field and 10 made 3-pointers to coast to the victory.

The Tornados face a quick turnaround as Brevard hosts its first game of the 2021-22 season on Friday at the Boshamer Gymnasium, welcoming Berry College for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
