Baseball Eliminates Methodist Behind Thompson’s CG Shutout; Winner-Take-All Set Up vs. William Peace on Sunday
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jacob Thompson pitched the second complete-game shutout of his career as the six-seeded Brevard College baseball team eliminated two-seed Methodist University with a 4-0 victory in the first of two Saturday contests for the Tornados in the USA South Conference Baseball Tournament.

Brevard was one out away from advancing to the USA South Championship Series, however, coughed up the lead and fell 13-9 in 10 innings to William Peace University in the nightcap. The defeat sets up a winner-take-all scenario for the Tornados and Pacers on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Armstrong-Shelley Field.

The victory over Methodist marked BC's second-consecutive playoff win, the first time the Tornados have accomplished that in the NCAA era. Friday's 5-2 win over the Pacers in extra innings marked the first NCAA-era postseason victory for BC Baseball.

GAME ONE - #6 BREVARD 4, #2 METHODIST 0

Thompson (5-3), a native of Gray, Georgia, turned in the most dominant performance of his sophomore campaign, allowing no runs on four hits with five strikeouts to blank the host Monarchs and eliminate them from the opening-round tournament.

Brevard was able to scratch across four runs in the victory, with Cale Oehler going 1–for-4 and accounting for two of those runs scored. Hayden Jennings went 2-for-2 at the plate and Lucas Granata also collected two hits at the dish, while Kenneth Pridmore launched a solo home run and had a sacrifice fly to drive in two Tornado runs.

Methodist's Gavin Wheeler accounted for two of MU's four hits, while Caleb Greene and Justin Blunt both had doubles, but the Monarchs were held off the board for the entirety of the contest as Methodist was held scoreless in all 18 innings played in the tournament. Andrew Baur (3-4) was handed the loss after giving up eight hits and four runs (three earned) in six innings of work.

After both sides went down in order in the first inning, Oehler and Granata hit back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the second. Pridmore grounded into a would-be double play, but the throw to first was wide and allowed Oehler to score and Pridmore to advance to second as the Tornados took a 1-0 lead.

The Monarchs hit a two-out double in the top of the third but Blunt was stranded after a flyout to right field.

After five scoreless innings from Thompson, Pridmore tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth with his solo home run to left field as Brevard extended its lead, to 2-0. BC got runners on the corners later in the frame but they were left stranded.

In the bottom of the sixth, BC loaded the bases with a single, fielding error, and bunt single with nobody out. Pridmore and Jennings hit consecutive sacrifice flys to bring in Frankie Vasquez and Oehler, as Brevard added a pair of insurance runs to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

The Monarchs loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Thompson forced a flyout to left field to end the threat.

Methodist put together a last-chance rally in the top of the ninth with a one-out single and two-out double that placed runners at second and third base. Still, Thompson induced a 5-3 groundout that put the Tornados one win away from the championship series as BC eliminated Methodist 4-0.

GAME TWO (10 Innings) - #3 WILLIAM PEACE 13, #6 BREVARD 9

Game two of the day was a hectic high-scoring affair that saw both teams combine for 24 runs and 29 hits while committing a combined five errors.

Four Tornados had multi-hit games as Logan Clark, Luke Morton, and Vasquez all logged three hits each with Clark and Vasquez tallying three RBIs apiece. Blake Burchett scored a team-high three runs while Clark and Morton came around to score twice each. Oehler logged two RBIs while Vasquez and Pridmore each hit doubles. Senior catcher Brett Burchett hit the first triple of his five-year Tornado career and was part of a 2-for-6 outing at the plate.

Brevard's Connor Crosby, the USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Year, got the start for the Tornados and went four innings allowing four hits and an earned run. Cameron Cook (1.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R) and Ethan Coleman (2.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R) filled up the middle innings for the Tornados, while Bryce Bowers (3-2) was saddled with the loss in extra innings as his lone run surrendered was the difference. Freshman Jacob Frizzell pitched the 10th inning allowing three runs on three hits with two walks.

Walks would come back to haunt the Tornados as Brevard gave up 13 free passes on the afternoon with 12 walks and a hit-by-pitch.

BC got on the board first as Vasquez plated Blake Burchett on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first. Oehler drove a single up the middle that scored Morton, as tue Tornados took the early 2-0 lead.

The Pacers added a run in the top of the second with an RBI double, but no further damage was allowed.

Vasquez drove in his second run of the contest with an RBI double that played Clark in the bottom of the third.

WPU cut the deficit back to one run in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly that plated one, making the score 3-2. However, BC tacked on two runs in the bottom half of the inning with another Vasquez RBI single and an Oehler RBI groundout, as the Tornados held a 5-2 lead.

The Pacers used a two-run Homer and an RBI single followed by a throwing error to take their first lead of the day, 6-5 in the top of the sixth. BC immediately responded, however, as Zach Allison hit a sacrifice fly to bring Brett Burchett around to score after his leadoff triple. Clark hit an RBI single later in the inning that scored Blake Burchett and gave BC the lead back, 7-6.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Clark delivered once again this time with a crucial two-RBI single with two outs that scored Allison and Blake Burchett and gave Brevard a 9-6 cushion to work with.

Coleman worked a flawless top of the eighth inning while Pridmore hit a one-out double in the bottom of the inning. Pinch-runner Joc Pledger advanced to third on a wild pitch with only one out, however, the Tornados were unable to bring Pledger across for an insurance run that would prove to be vital.

Coleman returned to work the ninth inning and got the first out after a leadoff walk, but the Pacers continued to attack with consecutive singles to load the bases up with one away. Bowers was brought in to attempt to close the game out and induced an infield fly to the first batter, putting the Tornados an out away from advancing to the championship series of the USA South Conference in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

William Peace had other plans, however, drawing a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch followed by a pair of bases-loaded walks to tie things up, 9-9 in the top of the ninth. Bowers ensured an inning-ending groundout as the game shifted to the bottom of the ninth inning all knotted up.

Clark came up with two outs and stroked a single to right field that got past the right fielder, putting Clark 90 feet away from giving the Tornados a walk-off win. After an intentional walk to Vasquez, Oehler came up to the dish but grounded out to the Pacer first baseman as the game shifted to extra innings.

The Pacers were able to score four runs on four hits on a two-RBI single with one out followed by a wild pitch and an RBI single with two away. Brevard was sat down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th as the Pacers kept the Tournament alive with the 13-9 victory.

BC and WPU will meet in a winner-take-all contest scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. in Fayetteville.
