Tornados Sweep Series Over Hornets

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (6-3) defeated Northern Vermont University-Lyndon (1-4) in both games of a doubleheader featuring two seven-inning contests on Friday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.  With the doubleheader win, the Tornados swept the three-game series over the Hornets.

Brevard outscored the visitors from Northern Vermont – Lyndon 23-3 in the doubleheader and 33-7 in the three-game series.

GAME ONE – BREVARD 7, NORTHERN VERMONT-LYNDON 1

Junior Trenten Anderson (1-2) started the game on the mound for the Tornados and went on to earn his first win of the season in a strong performance.  Anderson pitched a complete six innings, allowing one run on just four hits and striking out six Hornet batters.  The Orange City, Florida native was especially dominant following the first inning.  Anderson threw 5.2 shutout innings, allowing just one hit to conclude his outing and hold NVUL in check offensively.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Matt Evans made his collegiate debut, pitching the seventh inning and shutting out the Hornets to close out the contest.  With the bases loaded following an error, a single and a walk, Evans struck out the final batter of the game to strand the three Hornet base runners and cement the victory for the Tornados.

Offensively, BC registered seven hits with three of the base hits coming as triples.

Centerfielder Logan Clark provided a 2-for-2 performance with a triple, two runs scored, two stolen bases, a sacrifice fly and two RBI. Left fielder Lucas Granata went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.  Catcher Tristan Robinson tripled as well to drive in a run.

After the Hornets took a 1-0 lead, BC leadoff hitter Blake Burchett drew a walk in the home team's first at bat.  Burchett promptly went to third on a Luke Morton single, then scored on Clark's sacrifice fly.

In the third inning, Burchett would score again after a walk, a stolen base and two wild pitches to give BC a 2-1 lead.  Clark's triple and an RBI single from Granata followed to extend the lead to 4-1.

An RBI grounder by third baseman Frankie Vazquez and RBI triples by Granata and Robinson rounded out the scoring.

GAME ONE – BREVARD 16, NORTHERN VERMONT-LYNDON 2

With a series sweep in their sights, the Tornados delivered an emphatic 16-2 victory in game two of the twin bill.

Bryce Bowers (1-0) earned the win following a stellar starting performance, going 6.0 innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits to go along with six strikeouts and just one walk.

Freshman Greg Simmons made his first career appearance in relief of Bowers and finished the job with a hitless seventh inning.

Offensively, BC benefited from 14 walks and opportunistic base running that included five stolen bases.  Morton stole three bags, while Burchett and Granata each recorded a steal as well.

Brevard registered four extra-base hits along the way, including triples from Burchett and Granata as well as doubles by Pledger and Vasquez.

The Tornados never trailed in the contest, jumping on the Hornets with two runs in the first and four in the second.

The scoring barrage continued with a six-run fifth inning that included RBI singles by Morton and Baylor Wyatt, a two-RBI single by Peter Fumero, and a sacrifice fly by Mykah Johnson that scored pinch runner Juan Perez Portes to cap off the 16-2 victory.

Next up for Brevard is a doubleheader vs. Guilford, beginning at 12 p.m., on Sunday at Gil Coan Field.  Northern Vermont-Lyndon is scheduled to play Guilford in a neutral-site game on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Gil Coan Field.
