BREVARD, N.C. – Freshman third baseman Frankie Vasquez secured his fifth USA South Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week selection of the 2022 season, and Brevard College baseball's eighth rookie of the week award overall this year.
Vasquez, a native of Pembroke Pines, Florida, went a combined 4-for-7 (.571) with a .667 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage to go along with one run scored, four RBIs, a solo home run, and two walks as the Tornados swept a home-and-home series from Bob Jones University last week.
The honor marks the eighth Rookie of the Week accolade won by the BC baseball team in 2022, with teammate Cale Oehler winning the award for three consecutive weeks in March. Freshman left-handed pitcher Noah Webb won Rookie Pitcher of the Week accolades and senior LHP Matthew Scavotto garnered Pitcher of the Week honors earlier in the season.
Vasquez finished up his freshman campaign with staggering numbers at the plate, ranking second on the team in hits (44) and extra-base hits (11) while slugging three home runs and driving in 33 runs, which is third on the team. Vasquez was second on the team in average (.358) and had a .496 slugging percentage with a .427 on-base percentage. Defensively, the freshman was involved in 10 double plays.
Vasquez's accolade gives Brevard 30 USA South Conference weekly awards won by a Brevard College student-athlete in the 2021-22 season in the final week of weekly conference awards handed out by the USA South.
Vasquez and the Tornados enjoyed one of the team's best seasons in the NCAA era, winning 21 total games and 13 home contests, which both rank second in the program's NCAA era of competition. Brevard is top-10 nationally with 115 stolen bases (7th in the country).
