BC Takes Straight Set Win over Agnes Scott for First Victory of 2019

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Brevard College Volleyball team (1-17, 1-5 USAS) won its first match of the 2019 season with a straight-set USA South Conference victory over Agnes Scott on Saturday in Demorest, Georgia. Brevard won 25-22 in set one, 25-18 in set two, then clinched the match with an authoritative 25-9 result in set three.

Later in the day, the Tornados dropped a three-setter to Covenant (6-12, 5-2 USAS). Covenant defeated BC by the identical score of 25-14 in all three sets to take the league victory.
 
Both matches were played on a neutral site in a quad-match hosted by USA South Conference member Piedmont.
 
In the win over Agnes Scott, Breanna O'Shields led the Tornados offensively with seven kills to go along with an ever-important 11 digs on the defensive side. Libero Mariana Rodriguez registered 19 digs as BC's top defender.  Rodriguez also delivered three service aces. Lande Simpson led all players with 11 assists and four service aces to generate a significant offensive attack for Brevard.
 
The long-awaited win for the Tornados came after opening the season with 16 straight defeats.  BC was in control throughout the match vs. Agnes Scott en route to the initial win of 2019.
 
Set number one proved to be the tightest of the three sets as BC found itself two points away from the opening set win leading 23-22.  O'Shields promptly recorded a kill for the Tornados to create a set point situation leading 24-22.  With Rodriguez handling the service, the Tornado libero perfectly placed a service ace to give BC the 25-22 first set win.
 
The second set was a more comfortable affair for the Tornados as O'Shields continued to rack up her totals with 10 digs and five kills through two sets.  Rodriguez added another service ace, while Simpson brought her assist total to nine after two sets. It all added up to a 25-18 BC win putting the Tornados one set away from a match victory.
 
The Tornados cruised to victory in the third set as O'Shields guided BC to victory with a long string of winning points during her service to clinch the set win 25-9 and the match win 3-0.
 
In the afternoon affair, Covenant controlled much of the action en route to the 3-0 victory.
 
In the match vs. Covenant, Rodriguez once again put up a 19-dig performance to lead the Tornados defensively. O'Shields chipped in with 12 digs to go along with a team-high seven kills. Simpson and Hannah Gordon facilitated the Tornado hitters with eight assists each.
 
After 11 straight matches on the road, Brevard returns home for a USA South match vs. Piedmont on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
