Tornados Fall to Salem on Friday Night at the Bosh

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Volleyball team (0-5) dropped a hard-fought, four-set home match to Salem College (3-2) on Friday night at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

Salem won the opening set 27-25, followed by a 25-20 second-set win by the Spirit.  The third set, however, went in favor of the Tornados who kept the match alive with a 25-19 win.  The Spirit then closed out the match with a decisive 25-11 victory in set four.

In the four-set match, Tornados were led offensively by double-digit kill performances by sophomore Sydney Fox (16 kills) and freshman Breanna O'Shields (10 kills). Brook Groves added five kills towards the Tornado attack.

BC setter Hannah Gordon set up her teammates with 25 assists. Libero Mariana Rodriguez led the Tornados with 20 digs to go along with five assists.

The Tornados totaled eight service aces on the evening led by three aces by Morgan Graham.

Salem was led on the offensive end by Taylor Moulton with 13 kills. Setter Hannah Delcamp put up a match-high 43 assists and 24 digs.

The first set saw the Tornados come from behind from a 24-21 deficit with three straight points starting with a kill by Fox off a Gordon assist. Fox then reeled off two straight points at the server position to tie the set with 24-24. After Salem took the lead 25-24, an O'Shields kill tied the set up again. The Spirit then registered back-to-back points to take the set 27-25.

Set two saw Salem jump out to a 7-2 lead before five straight points led by Graham's service. Trailing later in the set 23-13, the Tornados went on another scoring run.  On a Rodriguez service, BC scores five straight points before Salem ultimately pulled away for a 25-20 win.

Leading 20-19 in the third set, the Tornados finished off the Spirit with five straight points with Julie McGahy serving to earn BC the set win.

The fourth set was a one-sided affair as Salem running out to an 8-0 lead en route to the match-clinching victory.

Brevard will return to action as the host of a tri-match on Saturday at the Boshamer Gymnasium. The Tornados open play at 12 p.m. with a match against Piedmont International.  Guilford then plays Piedmont International at 2 p.m. followed by a tri-match finale of BC vs. Guilford at 4 p.m.
