  • 112 Brevard College Student-Athletes Selected to USA South Academic All-Conference Team

    The USA South Conference announced its annual USA South Academic All-Conference list, selecting a school-record 112 Brevard College student-athletes as Academic All-Conference selections, part of a conference-record 1,702 overall selections. Brevard’s 112 selections onto the Academic All-Conference team gives the Tornados 21 more selections than the 2018-19 season, as BC ranks tied for sixth out of the 18 USA South institutions in overall selections. A total of 32 student-athletes earned “With Distinction” honors, a significant growth of 15 selections from last academic year. The BC men’s soccer program claimed the most selections onto the Academic All-Conference team with 16, as every single team at Brevard was recognized by the USA South. In order to be selected to the USA South Academic All-Conference team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.30 GPA in each of the two semesters in the academic year to be eligible. Any student-athlete participating at any Conference institution is eligible thus the participant does not have to compete in a Conference-sponsored sport. Additionally, any student-athlete earning a 3.90 GPA or above earned the All-Academic honor "With Distinction".
  • Grant Names Kia Kaufman as Assistant Volleyball Coach at Brevard College

    Head Volleyball Coach Anna Grant has selected Kia Kaufman to serve on her staff as the Assistant Volleyball Coach at Brevard College. “I am so excited to bring Kia onto the staff and into the Brevard community,” commented Grant on Kaufman’s hire. “She is very eager to get into the college coaching world and I’m excited to help her grow as a collegiate coach. Her experience in technical training will be a huge asset in our gym and I’m really looking forward to working with her. Her extensive experience in the club world in Colorado will also be a huge benefit for us in recruiting. Our team enjoyed talking with her during the interview process so I’m thankful to have had their input in the decision.”
  • Brevard Volleyball Announces Schedule for 2020 Season

    The Brevard College volleyball program, under the direction of Head Coach Anna Grant, has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2020 season.  The schedule of opponents includes a total of 28 matches, 16 of which coming in USA South Conference play, and 11 contests inside of the Boshamer Gymnasium for the Tornados.  2020 marks the first season that the Tornados will compete as fully-eligible members of NCAA DIII, as BC will seek a bid into the 2020 USA South Conference Volleyball Postseason Tournament. 
  • Brevard College, USA South Conclude Spring Sports as Response to COVID-19

    After careful consideration in the wake of nationwide cancellations and postponements in the intercollegiate and professional sports landscape as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, and in the best interest of the health and well-being of student-athletes, family, staff, and fans, the USA South Athletic Conference has announced the conclusion of the 2020 Spring regular season. This also extends to all USA South Conference championships and the 2020 USA South Spring Sports Festival, originally scheduled for April 23-26 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. As a result of this news, and in alignment with the USA South and the NCAA, the Brevard College Department of Athletics will be suspending all athletic-related activity - including competitions, practices, and travel – for the remainder of the 2020 Spring semester. This extends out to current Spring sports in their traditional season of competition as well as Fall sports entering into their non-traditional practice seasons. The cancellation of all athletically-related activities includes Brevard College's non-NCAA sports of Cycling, Climbing, and Competitive Cheer & Dance, while also extending to the use of on-campus athletic facilities such as the weight room and gymnasiums, among other areas.
  • Rodriguez Earns All-State Honor from NCCSIA

    Sophomore libero Mariana Rodriguez was selected to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) College Division All-State Volleyball Second Team. The NCCSIA awards All-State teams in the sports of Baseball, Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Soccer, Softball, and Volleyball in two categories – University and College. The University Division includes NCAA DI schools across the state, while the College Division includes NCAA DII and DIII schools across North Carolina.  Rodriguez recorded a total of 475 digs, which averaged out to a 5.34 digs-per-set mark. The Houston native ranked third in the USA South Conference with her 5.34 digs-per-set total and was named as a USA South Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week selection during the course of the 2019 season. The sophomore’s 5.34 digs-per-set mark is the fifth-highest single-season total in Brevard’s NCAA-era history. In Rodriguez’s two seasons at Brevard, she has averaged 4.80 digs-per-set, which ranks third all-time in the NCAA-era for career digs-per-set.
  • Timiah McGhee Picked to USA South Volleyball All-Sportsmanship Team

    Brevard College’s Timiah McGhee was named the Tornados’ representative on the USA South Conference Volleyball All-Sportsmanship Team.  McGhee, a freshman middle blocker from Dover, Delaware, played in 18 matches this season. She recorded 24 kills and seven blocks for the Tornados in 2019, helping BC earn a season sweep over USA South opponent Agnes Scott College.  McGhee recorded a season-high three kills on four separate occasions this season and tallied three solo blocks on October 29 in a home match vs. Bob Jones University at the Boshamer Gymnasium. 
  • Volleyball Earns Victory in Final Day of 2019 Season

    The Brevard College volleyball team (2-25, 2-12 USAS) earned a victory on the last day of its 2019 season, achieving a 3-0 sweep over host Agnes Scott (0-23, 0-14 USAS) on Saturday morning.  In the second contest for the Tornados of the USA South Conference quad-match, Covenant (10-17, 9-5 USAS) defeated Brevard 3-0 late Saturday afternoon. In the win over Agnes Scott, freshman Breanna O’Shields led the Tornados offensively with 11 kills, tying her career-high. Brook Groves was second amongst all players in the category with eight kills.  
  • Brevard Swept in Straight Sets by Piedmont

    The Brevard College volleyball team (1-24, 1-11 USAS) fell in a mid-week USA South Conference match against the Piedmont College Lions (9-17, 5-7 USAS) on Wednesday evening at The Cave Arena in Demorest, Georgia.  Mariana Rodriguez’s 20 digs led a Brevard defense that accumulated 60 total digs. Rodriguez added to her digs-per-set total, as the sophomore from Houston has averaged 5.36 digs-per-set in 2019, a mark that is third in the USA South. Two other Tornados tallied double-digit dig totals alongside Rodriguez, as freshmen Breanna O’Shields (11 digs) and Grace Pukas (10 digs) added to Brevard’s defensive effort.
  • Brevard Hosts Dig Pink Match for Home Finale, Falls to Bob Jones

    The Brevard College volleyball team hosted its “Dig Pink” match on Tuesday evening - its annual match in correlation with the Sideout Foundation promoting Breast Cancer Awareness - as the Tornados (1-23) fell to the visiting Bob Jones University Bruins (26-4), 3-0, in BC’s final home contest of the 2019 season at the Boshamer Gymnasium. Mariana Rodriguez paced Brevard’s defense with 13 kills, while freshman Breanna O’Shields had a well-rounded effort with 10 digs and five kills. Freshman setter Grace Pukas led the Tornados by dishing out 10 assists. Fellow freshmen Julie McGahy (4 kills) and Timiah McGhee (3 kills) also contributed to the Tornado attack. 
  • Brevard Hosts USA South Conference Quad-Match at the Bosh

    The Brevard College Volleyball team (1-22, 1-10 USAS) dropped two matches as the host of a USA South Conference quad-match on Saturday at the Boshamer Gymnasium. The Tornados played Huntingdon on Saturday morning to open action at the quad-match.  Huntingdon (18-13, 7-3 USAS) won the contest 3-0 despite the Tornados playing competitively throughout all three sets.
  • Tornados Drop Two in Maryville
    October 19, 2019
    The Brevard College volleyball team (1-20, 1-8 USAS) dropped two matches at a USA South Conference quad-match Saturday afternoon in Maryville, Tennessee. Brevard fell in three sets to Berea (10-11, 5-3 USAS) in a neutral-site contest to start the day followed by a straight-set defeat to host Maryville (18-6, 9-0 USAS) in the nightcap. Berea topped Brevard 25-14 in the first set of the day for the Tornados, then followed with identical 25-22 scores in sets two and three. In the match vs. Berea, freshman Breanna O’Shields led the Tornados in both kills (seven) and digs (18) to go along with two service aces. Raley Shirey and Julie McGahy each registered six kills apiece to help O’Shields pace Brevard’s attack.  Setter Hannah Gordon dished out 11 assists while Mariana Rodriguez registered 12 digs in the effort.
  • Piedmont Withstands Brevard’s Late Rally for Conference Win

    The Brevard College Tornados Volleyball team (1-18, 1-6 USAS) put together a late rally that included a third-set win, 25-23, before ultimately falling in four sets to the visiting Piedmont College Lions (7-13, 3-4 USAS) by a final score of 3-1 on Wednesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium. Sophomore right-side hitter Brook Groves set a new career-high 12 kills to lead the Tornado attack, while sophomore defensive specialist Morgan Graham’s career-best 21 digs led the Tornado defense. Freshman Breanna O’Shields added 18 digs while defending USA South Conference Defensive Player of the Week Mariana Rodriguez tallied 13 digs. Junior Hannah Gordon dished out 28 total assists, while freshman Sarah Hutchens tallied three blocks (two solo, one assist).  The match marked Brevard’s first back within the confines of the Boshamer Gymnasium since a September 7 non-conference tri-match. 
  • Mariana Rodriguez Claims USA South Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week Honor

    Sophomore Mariana Rodriguez was named the USA South Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week award for an impressive individual performance that helped the Brevard College Tornados volleyball team earn its first win of 2019 - a 3-0 sweep vs. Agnes Scott in Demorest, Georgia.  The announcement marks the first USA South weekly award for the BC volleyball team since becoming members of the conference.  The sophomore defensive specialist from Houston, Texas averaged 6.33 digs per set as the Tornados posted a 1-1 record over the weekend. In a 3-0 win over Agnes Scott, Rodriguez totaled 19 digs, three service aces, two assists and one kill. In a 3-0 loss to Covenant, Rodriguez posted 19 digs and one service ace.
  • BC Takes Straight Set Win over Agnes Scott for First Victory of 2019

    The Brevard College Volleyball team (1-17, 1-5 USAS) won its first match of the 2019 season with a straight-set USA South Conference victory over Agnes Scott on Saturday in Demorest, Georgia. Brevard won 25-22 in set one, 25-18 in set two, then clinched the match with an authoritative 25-9 result in set three. Later in the day, the Tornados dropped a three-setter to Covenant (6-12, 5-2 USAS). Covenant defeated BC by the identical score of 25-14 in all three sets to take the league victory. Both matches were played on a neutral site in a quad-match hosted by USA South Conference member Piedmont.

    The Brevard College Volleyball team (0-14, 0-2 USAS) dropped a pair of matches to league rivals Huntingdon (11-10, 2-0 USAS) and LaGrange (3-13, 1-1 USAS) to commence USA South Conference play on Saturday afternoon in Montgomery, Alabama.
  • BC Wins Games, Drops Matches at Tri-Match in Lynchburg, Va.

    The Brevard College Volleyball team (0-12) earned game wins in a pair of match defeats to Greensboro (7-6) and Randolph (6-6) on Saturday in Lynchburg, Virginia. In the first match of the day vs. Greensboro, Brevard fell behind 1-0 with a 25-16 loss in the opening set. The Tornados played the Pride tightly in set number two, falling 25-23. The third set proved fruitful for Brevard as the Tornados won 25-19 to extend the match.  A close fourth set went in favor for the Pride who won 25-23 to close out the match.
  • Quakers Best Tornados in Greensboro

    Junior Raley Shirey and freshman Breanna O’Shields led the attack for Brevard with five kills apiece as the Brevard College Tornados Volleyball team (0-10) fell in straight sets, 3-0 to the Guilford Quakers (8-3) in a non-conference match on Friday evening in Greensboro, N.C.  Friday’s matchup was a rematch of a September 7 contest where the Quakers defeated the Tornados in straight sets at the Boshamer Gymnasium in Brevard, N.C.  Sophomore Mariana Rodriguez led Brevard with 15 digs, while junior Hannah Gordon dished out 13 assists.

    The Brevard College Tornados Volleyball Team (0-7) hosted a tri-match, as BC welcomed Guilford College (3-3) and Piedmont International University (4-3) to the Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday.  Brevard matched up with the Bruins of Piedmont International for the first match, where PIU won a thrilling five-set match, 3-2, over the Tornados. The Bruins then faced Guilford in the middle match, which also went five sets long. Guilford, who was on the brink of defeat trailing 2-1 in the contest, battled back to defeat the Bruins in five sets. The tri-match was capped off with Brevard vs Guilford, as the Quakers swept the Tornados in straight sets. Total playing time for the action-packed tri-match was five hours and 37 minutes. 
  • Tornados Fall to Salem on Friday Night at the Bosh

    The Brevard College Volleyball team (0-5) dropped a hard-fought, four-set home match to Salem College (3-2) on Friday night at the Boshamer Gymnasium. Salem won the opening set 27-25, followed by a 25-20 second-set win by the Spirit.  The third set, however, went in favor of the Tornados who kept the match alive with a 25-19 win.  The Spirit then closed out the match with a decisive 25-11 victory in set four. In the four-set match, Tornados were led offensively by double-digit kill performances by sophomore Sydney Fox (16 kills) and freshman Breanna O’Shields (10 kills). Brook Groves added five kills towards the Tornado attack.
  • Thrilling Five-Set Match Goes the Wasps’ Way

    The Brevard College Tornados Volleyball team (0-4) hosted its home-opener on Friday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium, claiming the first two sets before eventually falling, 3-2, to the visiting Emory & Henry Wasps (2-2). Sophomores Sydney Fox and Brook Groves led the attack for the Tornados offensively, as the pair each drove home 11 kills. Freshman Breanna O’Shields added nine kills to the offensive effort.  Junior setter Hannah Gordon dished out a match-high 35 assists for Brevard, while sophomore Mariana Rodriguez tallied 33 digs. Gordon and sophomore Morgan Graham each reached double-digit digs at 10 apiece.

  • Season Preview: Brevard College Volleyball Selected Sixth in USA South Preseason Poll

    The Brevard College Tornados Volleyball team was selected sixth in the annual USA South Conference Volleyball preseason poll on Thursday morning. The Covenant College Scots took the first place spot in the west division as the Scots vie for a fifth-straight west division title. The Scots received five first-place votes and tallied 46 total points in the poll. Huntingdon College and Maryville College were neck-and-neck for the second and third place in this year’s edition of the poll. The Hawks of Huntingdon garnered two first-place votes to Maryville’s one, and the Hawks edged the Maryville Scots with 42 points to the Scots’ 38. Piedmont College (4th, 30) and LaGrange College (5th, 28) were voted ahead of the Tornados, whose sixth-place finish was accomplished through receiving 16 total points. Berea College (7th, 13) and Agnes Scott College (8th, 11) rounded out the west division poll.
  • 91 Brevard College Student-Athletes Named USA South Academic All-Conference

    The USA South Conference on Friday morning released its annual USA South Academic All-Conference list, selecting 91 Brevard College student-athletes as Academic All-Conference selections. Additionally, 18 student-athletes collected “With Distinction” Academic All-Conference honors, accruing at least a 3.9 grade point average in both the Fall and Spring semesters.
