BEREA, Ky. – The duo of Hannah Elmore (15 kills) and Maggie Weiss (18 digs) helped the Brevard volleyball team wrap up its tri-match at Berea with a victory over the host Mountaineers by scores of 25-8, 25-7 and 25-13 on Saturday afternoon.

Joining Elmore with double figure offensive performances was Stephanie Lambert (10 kills) and Josie McElroy (31 assists), while Beasley (nine digs), Lambert (four total blocks) and Rachel Ruble (three total blocks) made their impressions felt on defense for the Tornados.

Elmore stepped up in the decisive third set for Brevard, registering three kills in the first nine points, as she and Weiss, who came through with a pair of aces, helped establish a 9-3 lead for the Tornados.

Berea rallied to score five of the next nine points, trimming the margin to 12-8, before Elmore came through with two strikes to make for a 21-13 Tornado lead. Kristen Rathbun stepped into serve for Brevard, collecting a pair of aces, as Brevard completed the 12-point win.

Lambert was again an integral cog in the Brevard offensive scheme, notching four service aces and using three Elmore kills to her advantage as the Tornados built a 14-1 advantage. The second Berea timeout was not enough to derail Brevard, which stretched its lead to 21-6, following a Weiss ace.

The Tornados surrendered just one point in the final stages and used a three kills from Lambert to complete the 25-7 win.

Brevard began its domination from the opening set, jumping out to a 12-3 advantage behind the combination of Lambert in serve and Ruble on defense, who assisted on three blocks.

Two kills each by Elmore and Lambert forced Berea to spend its second timeout of the game, trailing 20-8. The Tornados scored the final five unanswered points, converting three aces by Bri Vargas, to earn the win.

HUNTINGDON 3, BREVARD 2

Hannah Elmore drove home 12 kills, while Whitney DeMoss and Stephanie Lambert added 10 each, but it was the tandem of Amy Tyma (21 kills) and Bria Rochelle (15) that proved to be the difference as Huntingdon came away with a 14-25, 25-20, 34-32, 19-25, 15-11 victory over Brevard.

The Tornados capped off the match with 44 strikes, but were limited offensively due in large part to 24 unforced errors, while Huntingdon ended the contest with 66 kills and a .172 attack percentage.

The two units battled throughout the opening stages of the decisive frame with Huntingdon grabbing a slim 5-4 lead on an unforced Tornado error. The Hawks then managed to put together a 7-1 run, forcing a Brevard timeout, capped off by a kill from Addison Genard.

A brief run by the Tornados, which included kills from Lambert and Rachel Ruble, was not enough as Huntingdon took advantage of three unforced Brevard errors down the stretch to come away with the four-point triumph.

Brevard's offensive attack found the rhythm it enjoyed in the first set as the combination of Vargas in serve and a pair of kills by Lambert provided a 16-9 lead. Ruble and Vargas followed with a series of points, following a Huntingdon timeout, as the Tornados moved in front 21-13.

The Hawks made one final push, following three kills by Tyma, making for a 22-19 contest as Brevard burned its first timeout. That breather proved to be the difference as Lambert emerged with a kill and two service aces to send the match to a decisive fifth set.

The Hawks carried over momentum established in the second into the third, streaking out to an 18-9 lead following an assisted block from the tandem of Rochelle and Shelby McAllister. But Brevard was resilient, forcing five Hawk errors between the service games of Vargas, Josie McElroy and Kathryn Beasley to pull even at 25-all.

Neither team was able to establish itself, battling through seven ties as the game reached a climatic 32-all deadlock on a slam by Elmore. It was there that Huntingdon powered home a kill by Genard and forced the Tornados to commit and error to complete the two-point win.

Huntingdon regained its composure and took a 4-0 lead, however Lambert's service game allowed Brevard to score eight of the next 12 points to knot the contest at eight-all. The Hawks took advantage of slams by Tyma and Alexis Cresman, again establishing a four-point advantage, but Brevard retaliated with kills by DeMoss and Vargas to make for a 15-14 game.

Tyma's service game, which allowed Huntingdon to extend the margin to 19-15, coupled with offensive strikes by Rochelle and Creasman proved to be the difference down the stretch as the Hawks completed the five-point victory.

Brevard opened strong with a .233 hitting percentage in the first set, breaking a four-all tie with a Hawk service error. That kill sparked a 10-5 run by the Tornados that included two kills from DeMoss, as they assumed a 14-9 advantage.

Huntingdon pulled within four, but the Tornados capitalized on three kills and four Hawk errors as they took a 20-13 lead. With Maggie Weiss in serve the Hawks committed two additional errors as Brevard dominated the opening match with an 11-point win.

HUNTINGDON 3, BREVARD 0 (Completion of Sept. 23 Match)

Brevard and Huntingdon put the finishing touches on a match that began on Sept. 23 in Alabama, but was halted due to an electrical outage. The Hawks completed the three-game sweep by scores of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-21.

Leading the way for the Tornados was Hannah Elmore, who finished with eight kills in 33 total attacks. The Hawks were led by the combination of Bria Rochelle (nine kills) and Tyma (eight) as they tallied 37 team kills and a .202 attack percentage.

Leading 9-8 when the match was stopped in the third frame, the two teams returned to action this afternoon. Huntingdon built a four-point lead, 13-9, but the Tornados answered with a 6-2 run that pulled the game even at 15.

With Brevard in front 19-17, following a kill by Elmore, the Hawks rallied to knot the contest at 20. They allowed just one Tornado point down the stretch and converted two kills from Tyma, closing out the sweep by four points.

With its offense clicking on all cylinders, Huntingdon streaked out to a 13-5 lead in the second set behind three kills off the hand of Alexis Creasman. Brevard briefly trimmed the margin to six, 14-8, before Amy Tyma took over in serve for the Hawks who ran off nine unanswered points to forge ahead 23-9.

The Tornados capitalized on a kill by Lambert and two unforced Huntingdon errors to reach double figures, but a kill by Emily Fedonczak completed the win.

Leading by two points in the early stages of the first set, Huntingdon stretched the advantage to 12-5 on four unforced Tornado errors, forcing the first timeout of the game. Four kills over the next 10 points allowed the Hawks to stretch their lead to 18-9.

Elmore and DeMoss drove a series of kills past the Huntingdon defense, putting the Tornados into double figures, but it was a series of service aces by Kaitlyn Carter and three Brevard attack errors down the stretch that provided the Hawks with a 10-point win.

The Tornados return to action in one week when they head to Maryville for a series of matches against LaGrange and the host Scots on Saturday, Oct. 21
