Women’s Tennis Opens Campaign with 5-4 Victory

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard women's tennis team opened their 2017 season with a 5-4 victory over Montreat at the McCoy Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The win marks the first NCAA Division III victory in program history.

Jen Cox grabbed her first win in collegiate singles competition with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Cierra Hunter. Teammate Margaret Correll opened her collegiate career with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Kaitlyn Thomas.

The Tornados split the singles competition with Carmen Boone's 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Emily Wells. Meanwhile, Cavaliers posted victories by Elizabeth Beary, Hayley Taylor and Allison Merrell.

Brevard earned a two victories in doubles play, including an 8-6 win by Kusher/Cox over Beary/Taylor, helping Cox earn her first doubles victory. The second came from Correll/Bowman, who came away with their first doubles win an 8-3 victory against Thomas/Wells. The lone Montreat victory came from the tandem of Merrell/Hunter, who downed Hatter/Boone by an 8-5 margin.

The Tornados return to the court on Feb. 3, 2018, when they play Southern Wesleyan.
