Brevard teammates Hannah Spear and Mekenzie Bowman picked up two singles wins on Tuesday afternoon, but it was not enough to hold off a strong Piedmont squad that emerged with a 7-2 win in women’s tennis action.
The Brevard women’s tennis team completed a unique doubleheader on Saturday, March 24, by competing in two matches in two different states over a 12-hour span, and as a result posted its first 9-0 sweep of the season against Wesleyan College just before midnight.
The Brevard women’s tennis team looks to avenge its recent setback, which came to Agnes Scott on Saturday, when the two units square off on Tuesday, March 20. The match, originally set to begin at 2:30 p.m., has been moved to 11:30 a.m. with the threat of rain in the area.
The doubles tandem of Mekenzie Bowman and Margaret Correll recorded a victory over Mattie Wood and Maureen Truett to provide the Brevard women’s tennis team with a point against Piedmont, who emerged with an 8-1 win at the Brevard Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon.
With inclement weather in the forecast for Western North Carolina, the Brevard men’s and women’s tennis match against visiting Piedmont, originally set for Wednesday, Feb. 28, has been moved to Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Brevard Tennis Center.
The Belmont Abbey women’s team posted a 9-0 victory over the Tornados, grabbing an early lead in the match with doubles wins by the combination of Darian DeFrench / Erica Dorn, Blair Boatright / Alex Weber and Erika Noblett / Emily Heim.
Spear began the afternoon by teaming with Carmen Boone in doubles action, where the pair defeated Houston Childress and Caitlynn Nixon by a 9-8 (3) margin. Spear followed that by downing Childress by scores of 6-2, 6-4, was the lone women’s player to record a singles victory for the Tornados on the afternoon.
The Brevard women’s tennis team opened their 2017 season with a 5-4 victory over Montreat at the McCoy Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The win marks the first NCAA Division III victory in program history.
