Caroline David & Megan Shina Score, Defense Shines in Victory Over Huntingdon

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Women's Soccer team (9-5-0, 5-2-0) defeated the Huntingdon Hawks (6-5-3, 4-3-0) 2-0 late Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Field.  It marked the second win in as many days for the Tornados.

The BC attack was paced by seniors Megan Shina and Caroline David, who each picked up first-half goals to put the Tornados on top.

Shina (10th goal of the season) took matters into her own hands in the 16th minute. The BC senior captain took the ball and defeated the Huntingdon defender one-on-one, leading to a perfectly placed strike over Huntingdon goalkeeper Kylie Kersh's head.

David (third goal of the season), who is usually known for her passing, took advantage of a deflected ball to give the Tornados a 2-0 advantage in the 27th that they wouldn't relinquish.

The story for BC was its impressive defensive performance. Starting defender Lane Berchtold was sidelined with an injury, so Head Coach Juan Mascaro shifted star forward Ashley Hughes to the defensive position. This is a position that Hughes is very familiar with, as she anchored the Tornado defense for the majority of the 2017 campaign. It was the solid defensive efforts of Hughes, Emma White, Chloe Proffitt, and Aliyah Vaughan which ultimately propelled the Tornados to victory.

To complement this impressive defensive showing, starting goalkeeper Rebeccah Rojas (6-3-0) tallied eight saves in her second consecutive shutout. This match marked the fourth shutout for Rojas in 2018. This ties a BC single-season NCAA-era high for shutouts, as Rojas sits tied atop the record books with Jocelyn Springer (2014).

Two-time USA South Conference Defensive Player of the Week Hannah Weatherall made her second-straight appearance in the field for Brevard, part of Mascaro's adjustments. Weatherall played all 90 minutes of Saturday's match.

Both teams were equal in shooting, firing ten shots each. BC recorded eight saves, including five in the first half.

The Tornados return to action as they travel to Maryville, Tenn. for a USA South Conference showdown with the Maryville Scots. The action is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 17.
