Brevard Routs Berea in USA South Conference Opener

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College Tornados Women's Soccer team (4-2, 1-0) exploded on Saturday afternoon, scoring seven goals against the Berea Mountaineers (4-2, 0-1) in the two teams' USA South conference opening match. The match was a part of the 2018 Homecoming festivities at Brevard College.

Brevard was led by its core group of seniors in this match, as Ashley Hughes, Megan Shina, and Caroline David all contributed heavily to the Tornados triumph.

The action through the first 20 minutes was slow to develop, as both teams tried to figure out their game plan and get in a groove. Megan Shine broke through first, as she connected for her fourth goal of the season in the 24th minute of action. This first goal of the match was assisted by Caroline David after a gorgeous pass from the middle of the pitch.

Caroline would be next to score, as she found the back of the net in the 38th minute. David scored for the first time in 2018, and Abbie Petrosky tallied the assist. Petrosky recorded her first assist as a member of the Tornados and would tally another one before the match was over.

After taking a 2-0 lead into the half, the Tornados didn't rest on their laurels. Instead, they attacked for the remainder of the match. The dynamic duo of Megan Shina and Caroline David showed up again in the scoring column, as Shina put home her second goal of the match in the 49th minute off of a David assist.

Just a minute later, Brevard would add to their lead once again, as Caroline found the back of the net for the second time in the match. This 50th-minute goal came off of an Ashley Hughes pass, putting the Tornados up 4-0.

Hughes wasn't done getting in on the action. After her assist, Hughes would score three times in a span of ten minutes to secure the victory for Brevard. Hughes scored on a header attempt in the 56th minute thanks to a perfectly placed corner kick by Megan Shina.

Just six minutes later, Hughes scored again, as she was fouled in the box resulting in a 62nd-minute penalty kick that was placed past the outstretched arms of Berea goalkeeper Amber Follin.

Hughes would cap off her first career hat trick as she scored in the 65th minute. This seventh and final BC goal was thanks to great ball movement by Caroline David (3rd assist) and Abbie Petrosky (2nd assist). With this third goal of the match, Hughes became the current USA South leader in goals scored in 2018, as she has rung home eight goals this season. Hughes also moved into a tie for 14th place out of all NCAA Division III Women's Soccer players for goals scored in 2018. Caroline David also made an appearance on top of the USA South leaderboards, as she is tied for the conference lead in assists.

As good as the offense was, the defense was equally impressive. Hannah Weatherall (2-0-0) made her second start in as many games at goalkeeper. Alongside a fantastic defensive effort from Juan Mascaro's team, Weatherall recorded her first shutout of 2018, the second one of her BC career. Her career record improves to 3-1-0.

"We demonstrated today what great team chemistry and hard work can accomplish on the soccer field," stated Coach Mascaro after Saturday's victory. "I am extremely proud of this team."

With Saturday's victory over Berea, the Brevard College Women's Soccer team set a new program record, as this was the largest margin of victory for the Women's Soccer team over an NCAA opponent since joining the NCAA ranks in the 2008-2009 season.

The Tornados will look to win their third match in a row as they host the Averett Cougars tomorrow. The action is slated to begin at 2 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Field.
