Tornados finish preseason slate in a defensive showdown with Cavaliers

Brevard, N.C.- To close out the 2018 preseason slate, the Tornados took on the NAIA's Montreat Cavaliers at Ives-Lemel Family Field on Tuesday, August 28th. This bout marked the second official exhibition for the Tornados in the 2018-19 campaign, as they prevailed in the preseason opener at Southern Wesleyan, 2-1.

Tuesday's action saw what proved to be a defensive slugfest between the two squads, characterized by ball possession and a bounty of shots by the Tornados. Brevard tallied 8 shots in the first period, followed by a furry of 12 shots in the second period. In regards to the night's statistical comparison, the Tornados prevailed in shots taken (22-10), corner kicks awarded (6-0), and shots on goal (14-1).

Tornados' Ashley Hughes and Megan Shina lead the way with shots taken on the night (7, 5 respectively). Shina also found an 80% clip on her shots finding the goal. With all the efforts of the Tornados to put pressure on the opposing defense with shots, it proves as an encouraging sign for Juan Mascaro's squad heading into regular season play.

Brevard's scoring efforts were thwarted by an outstanding performance by Cavalier's goalkeeper Payton Landy. She anchored Montreat's defense with 14 total saves and playing every single second of the double-overtime stalemate.

Fouls distributed totaled 8 for the Tornados, and 7 for Montreat. One yellow card was issued in the 79th minute, as the Cavalier's Lauren Starnes was carded in the waning minutes of the contest.

Tuesday's action counted as a full game for the Cavaliers, who move to 0-1-1 on the season. This game wrapped up Brevard's exhibition slate, as the Tornados gear up for the regular season with a tilt at Emory & Henry Friday at 7:00 pm.
