Piedmont’s Big Second Half Downs Brevard in Conference Battle

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Brevard College Tornados Women's Lacrosse Team (6-4, 3-2 USAS) fell by a final score of 15-5 to USA South foe Piedmont College (5-5, 4-1 USAS) on Wednesday evening in at the Walker Athletic Complex in Demorest, Georgia.

Micaiah Vacchiano, BC's leading goal-scorer in 2019, led the way for the Tornados with four goals. Jezika Gunter added a goal, while Hannah Scharf, Hunter Denney, and Cameron Ranslow posted assists in the contest. 

Katherine Collins grabbed a team-high eight ground balls, while Denney and Nicole O'Connor snagged four. 

Piedmont's Cassidy Heflin and Emma Frasen both scored four goals to lead the Lions' attack. 

The Lions converted five of their 12 free position attempts, while the Tornados went 1-for-7. 

Piedmont and Brevard traded goals to open action up before the Lions went on a five-goal run to take a 6-1 lead with 9:51 left in the first half. 

BC answered back with three-straight goals of its own, including back-to-back Vacchiano goals and Ranslow's first-career assist. The Tornados cut Piedmont's advantage to 6-4 before the Lions scored with just five seconds left in the first half to take a 7-4 lead to the intermission. 

Vacchiano opened the second half up with 26:18 left in the second half by sending a Scharf pass into the back of the net, trimming Piedmont's lead to 7-5. 

The Lions took control from that point on, scoring eight unanswered goals to cruise to the conference victory, 15-5. 

The Tornados will now turn their attention to a busy weekend of USA South play. Brevard travels to Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday, March 30 to face Greensboro College (2-6, 2-3 USAS) at 12 p.m. before heading to Rocky Mount, N.C. for a Sunday afternoon match against N.C. Wesleyan (0-9, 0-3 USAS) on March 31 at 1 p.m.
