MISENHEIMER, N.C. – In her final game as a college basketball player, Brevard College Women's Basketball senior guard Annalee Bollinger reached the 1,000 point mark for her career on Wednesday evening against Pfeiffer University.
Bollinger, who in her last outing became Brevard College's NCAA-era record-holder for career 3-pointers made, reached the 1,000 point threshold with a free throw at the 2:34 mark in the third quarter that put Brevard up 47-46.
Bollinger closes an outstanding college career with a grand total of 1,002 career points in her four-year college career, including a staggering 975 point total in her three seasons as a Brevard College Tornado. Bollinger also scored 27 points as a freshman at Saint Joseph's College (Ind.).
Along with holding the BC NCAA-era record for career 3-pointers made (188), Bollinger's 975 points as a Tornado rank fifth in BC NCAA-era history, while her 84% career free throw percentage ranks third.
The Brevard College Tornados Women's Basketball team (10-15) capped off its 2018-19 regular season with a tight 70-67 defeat on the road against Pfeiffer University (10-13) on Wednesday evening.
The Tornados had four starters reach double-figure scoring totals in the contest. Sophomore guard Ty'She Washington recorded a team-high 16 points alongside 10 rebounds. Washington, boosted by a season-high rebounding output, tallied her third career double-double in Wednesday's battle.
Sophomore forward Destiny Williams added 15 points, including 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Freshman center Avery Lockwood capped off an impressive freshman campaign by recording 14 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting. Lockwood, who saw foul trouble early, scored her 14 points in just 13 minutes played. Lockwood's 14 points set a new career-high total for the Foxworth, Miss. native.
Lockwood hauled in an impressive 192 rebounds over the course of her freshman season, a total that ranks fifth in BC NCAA-era history for single-season rebounds.
Bollinger wrapped up the double-digit scoring outputs for Brevard with 11 points. The senior played 38 minutes in her final collegiate game.
Senior guard JaTasha Hollinger wrapped up her collegiate playing days by earning her second-straight starting nod for Head Coach Donald Hudson's Tornados.
Pfeiffer earned a season split against Brevard in large part thanks to a scoring outburst from Kortni Pinion. Pinion racked up a game-high 26 points while having a hot 9-of-12 shooting night from the field, including 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Sydni Bickford added 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting for the hot-shooting Falcons on Wednesday evening.
The Falcons rode an impressive 51% (26-of-51) shooting from the field to victory, as the Tornados only hit at a 39.7% (25-of-63) clip.
Brevard was able to turn 16 Pfeiffer turnovers into 22 points-off-turnovers compared to the Falcons' 15 points-off-turnovers.
Wednesday evening's contest was tight wire-to-wire, as the game saw nine ties and 12 lead changes.
Pfeiffer and Brevard battled to a one-point, 14-13 Falcon lead at the end of the first quarter. Washington led the Tornados with four points after the first period, while Pfeiffer's Pinion held six points through the first frame.
Lockwood and Washington quickly hit 2-pointers to give Brevard a 17-14 lead early in the second frame. Brevard held this lead until PU's Brina Bentley put the Falcons up 20-19 with 6:38 left in the second quarter. After Pfeiffer held a game-high six-point advantage at 35-29, Brevard guard Washington hit a jumper before the intermission to cut Pfeiffer's lead to four points at 35-31 heading into the locker rooms.
A Williams free throw tied things up at 37-37 with 8:14 left in the third quarter. Williams would hit a jumper to give Brevard the lead back at 42-41 with 5:41 left in the third period.
Bollinger hit the back end of two free throws for her 1,000th point to push BC up 47-46, which sparked an 8-0 BC scoring run that pushed its lead to a game-high 54-46 margin with 1:03 left in the third quarter. Pfeiffer's Bickford quickly ended this run with a long-range shot, as the Falcons cut Brevard's lead to 54-51 heading into the final period.
Pfeiffer started the fourth quarter with nine-straight unanswered points to regain the lead at 60-54. A Washington 3-pointer ended this run, as the Tornados battled to keep the game within striking distance.
After an A'Mya McClain layup gave the Falcons a 62-57 advantage, Lockwood drained back-to-back layups to cut Pfeiffer's lead to 62-61 with 3:06 remaining in the tight contest.
Williams gave the Tornados a brief 63-62 lead before Pinion hit a layup on the next possession. Lockwood again hit a key layup to give BC a 65-64 lead with 1:13 left to play.
Pinior, Pfeiffer's leading scorer on Wednesday, was fouled and drained both free throws to give Pfeiffer a 66-65 advantage late.
The Tornados sent Pinion to the line once more after Brevard missed a layup on its end. Pinion made the front end but clanked the second free throw. However, Pfeiffer's Bickford grabbed a monumental offensive rebound to keep possession with the Falcons. Bickford was sent to the line, where she knocked in one of two free throws to give Pfeiffer a 68-65 lead with 19 seconds left in action.
Coach Hudson called a quick timeout to regroup his team and advance the ball. Brevard drew up a play for sophomore forward Destiny Wiliams, and she connected on a layup with 15 seconds left, cutting Pfeiffer's lead to 68-67.
Pfeiffer's Pinion was once again sent to the line with 12 seconds left, where she drilled both of her free throws to push the Falcons' lead to 70-67.
The Tornados once again took a timeout to draw up one final play with hopes to send the contest into overtime, however, a Deja Riddick 3-pointer fell just short as time expired, securing Pfeiffer's hard-fought 70-67 victory to close out 2018-19.
Brevard found themselves in close, tight contests all season. Out of its 15 defeats in 2018-19, 10 of them came by margins of 10 points or less.
Coach Donald Hudson and the 2018-19 Tornados led the program to new heights this season, reaching the double-digit win mark for the second time in program NCAA-history. Both of Brevard's double-digit winning seasons in NCAA-era history have come under the direction of Coach Hudson, as the team posted 12 wins in 2017-18.
