LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Brevard College Tornados Women's Basketball team (8-10, 4-8 USAS) fell in conference action on Wednesday evening to the Covenant Scots (6-13, 4-7 USAS) by a final score of 67-61. The tight contest saw 11 ties and 11 lead changes, with the Scots pulling away in the final stanza to claim a USA South victory.
Destiny Williams led the charge for Brevard with a career-high 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field. The Aiken, S.C. native hit two 3-pointers, finished with a near double-double effort of nine rebounds, and swiped four steals.
Ty'She Washington also set a new career-high scoring mark, tallying 18 points on an efficient 7-of-13 from the field, including 2-of-4 from long distance.
Senior guard Annalee Bollinger rounded out the double-digit offensive performances for Brevard, recording 10 points, all coming in the first half of play. Bollinger, Washington, and Williams accounted for 49 of BC's 61 points on Wednesday evening.
Avery Lockwood and Krysta Davis aided Brevard's rebounding efforts, tallying 10 and seven boards respectfully.
Covenant rode a balanced attack to victory, as three players reached double-figures in scoring.
Shooting numbers in the contest were near identical, however, the story was told in the turnover column. Brevard turned the ball over 30 times, which was a season-high for Head Coach Donald Hudson's squad. The Scots were opportunistic on defense, turning BC's mistakes into 24 points-off-turnovers. However, both sides proved careless with the ball throughout the contest, as Covenant committed 21 turnovers.
Covenant started action by scoring seven unanswered points within the span of 22 seconds. After a called timeout, the Tornados answered right back with a 13-0 run to take a game-high six-point lead.
Both sides battled closely through the rest of the first half, as a Washington 3-pointer sent BC to the break tied up with Covenant, 32-32. Bollinger led all scorers at the break with 10 points, however, a suffocating Covenant defensive presence held the Hickory, N.C. native scoreless through the rest of the game.
The two squads battled hard through the third period, trading buckets and turnovers back-and-forth. A JaTasha Hollinger last-second jumper cut Covenant's lead to just two points, 50-48.
Covenant's solid defense, which tallied a remarkable 21 steals, pushed the Scots past the Tornados in the final quarter, holding BC to just 13 points. Brevard turned the ball over seven times compared to two Covenant turnovers in the final quarter, proving to be the difference in the contest.
The Scots tied their largest lead twice in the fourth quarter, leading by 64-57 with 15 seconds left and again by 66-59 with 11 seconds left.
The Tornados fall to 3-7 away from the Boshamer Gymnasium. Of those seven losses, four have been by single-digit margins. Overall, BC has dropped six contests by single-digits in 2018-19, as Coach Hudson and the Tornados continue to battle in every single decision.
Brevard will look to get back on track as it hosts Agnes Scott (1-20, 1-11 USAS) in a rematch this Saturday at the Boshamer Gymnasium. The two sides met back on December 8, 2018, in Decatur, Ga., with the Tornados taking a 52-41 decision. Tip-off this Saturday is slated for 2 p.m.
