BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados Women's Basketball team (2-0) opened up its home slate in resounding fashion with a 77-61 victory over the Berry College Vikings (1-1) in non-conference action at the Boshamer Gymnasium on the campus of Brevard College Thursday evening.
The Tornados were led by four double-digit scorers alongside strong bench scoring.
Sophomore Destiny Williams led the way for the Tornados, posting her second double-double in as many games on the young season. Williams scored 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Williams stuffed the stat sheet with 10 rebounds to go alongside two assists, two steals, and two blocks.
Fellow sophomore Shakirah Thompson led the Tornados' bench, pouring in 15 points, all by way of the three-point shot. Thompson shot 5-of-6 from deep to account for all of her points.
Sophomore point guard Ty'She Washington recorded a double-double as well, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds while enjoying a perfect 8-of-8 night from the free throw line.
Senior guard Annalee Bollinger paced the Brevard offense with 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Sophomore Taryn Ledford and Freshman Avery Lockwood both turned in solid performances off the Brevard bench on Thursday evening. Ledford was lethal from long range, shooting 3-of-7 from deep for nine points. Lockwood anchored the post for Brevard, logging career-high totals in minutes (29), points (5), and rebounds (10). Lockwood's 10 boards tied the game-high mark.
The Tornados never trailed on Thursday evening, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back.
Brevard jumped out to an early 19-9 advantage after the first quarter of action. Berry outscored Brevard by two points in the second quarter as the Tornados held a 35-27 lead heading into the locker rooms.
Behind a Thompson three-point field goal, Brevard extended its lead to a game-high 19 points late in the third period. The Tornados entered the fourth quarter leading 52-37.
The Vikings would cut the BC advantage to as low as seven after a Capri Frazier layup made it 63-56. However, the Tornados would close on a 14-5 run to seal their second victory of 2018-19.
As a team, Brevard (40%) handily outshot Berry (27%) from the field. The Tornados also enjoyed a 52-to-41 rebounding advantage alongside making an astonishing 91% of their free throws (20-of-22).
Brevard was able to overcome a game-high 26 turnovers, something Head Coach Donald Hudson will be looking to clean up before the Tornados' next contest.
BC kept a fast-paced tempo throughout the contest, finishing 12 total fast break points. Brevard's bench outscored Berry by a 29-23 margin.
The BC Women's Basketball team returns to action on Monday, November 19. The Tornados travel down to Greenville, S.C. for a non-conference test against the Bob Jones Bruins. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
