Tornados Begin Track & Field Season at Wake Forest Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Brevard track and field team opened its 2018 spring slate on Sunday, Jan. 21st at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., taking part in 16 events over the course of the day.

The team of Molly Brown, Hannah Spear, Courtney Perkins and Kaitlin Chaump led the Tornados to their best finish of the afternoon, placing sixth place in the women's distance medley with a time of 16:19.38. The top men's finish also came in the distance medley from the team comprised of George Dowis, Leejhai Wells, Adam Spencer and Michael Anton. That unit crossed the line in 12:13.51 as they finished 11th.

Two Brevard runners, Mackenzie Lautenschlager (9.80, 74th) and Hannah Spear (10.06, 75th) took part in the women's 60 meter dash. In the men's event, Brevard was represented by Dylan Bradley (7.44, 53rd), Orrlando Johnson (7.80, 66th), Martigus Henley (7.87, 69th) and Joseph Roberts (7.99, 72nd).

Spear, along with teammate Olivia Brock, represented the Tornados in the women's 200 meter dash. Spear finished 63rd at the event in a time of 34.75 and Brock was next in line in a time of 44.35. Quentin Jackson and Leejhai Wells took part in the men's 200 meter dash and ended the event in 44th (24.68) and 49th (24.91), respectively.

Lautenschlager and Bradley also took part in the women's and men's 400 meter run at the event. Lautenschlager wrapped up the race 52nd in a time of 1:15.79, while Bradley crossed the line in 1:02.99 in 64th.

The duo of Courtney Perkins and Molly Brown participated in the women's 800 meter run. Perkins ran a time of 2:50.13, finishing 37th, and Brown crossed the line eight spots later in a time of 3:10.00.

Sophomore Kaitlin Chaump opened the season by competing in the women's one mile, finishing 42nd in a time of 6:33.93. Three members of the men's team, including Michael Anton (5:10.23, 43rd), George Dowis (5:36.15, 50th) and Michael Terry (7:40.15, 55th) represented Brevard in the men's one mile event.

Among the 16 events that the Tornados took place in was the men's 4x400 meter relay, which included teammates Orrlando Johnson, Jake Trainor, Martigus Henley and Quentin Jackson. That unit crossed the line in a time of 3:56.08, placing 16th.

Freshman Michael Phillips made his collegiate debut in the men's long jump where he finished 25th with a leap of 18'5.75. He also took part in the men's triple jump, finishing 16th with a total distance of 38'5.50.

Rhyanna Haden capped off the women's shot put event by placing 25th with a heave of 31'10.25, while teammates Joseph Roberts (34'11.25) and Gabriel Covington (27'10.25) placed 23rd and 30th, respectively, on the men's side.

The Tornados return to action on Monday, Feb. 12, when they compete at the Southern Indoor Challenge in Birmingham, Ala.
