BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Softball team (3-4) split a doubleheader with Methodist (4-8) on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Field.  The Tornados rebounded with an impressive 5-1 win after dropping game one of the twin bill, 5-2.

Game two proved to be a complete victory for the Tornados, who excelled on the mound and at the plate as well as defensively.

Starting pitcher Micayla McCoy (1-0), who was making her debut as a Tornado, earned the complete-game victory by holding the Monarchs to just one run on five hits over seven innings. McCoy allowed just one extra-base hit while striking out three and walking two batters.

It marked the second time in a span of less than 24 hours that a Tornado earned a complete game victory in their BC pitching debut.  On Friday night, freshman Ali Grace Hartman won in her first pitching appearance with a complete game victory over NC Wesleyan.

In the second game Saturday, the Tornado bats came alive after struggling in the opening contest.  First baseman Mari Cook went 2-for-3 with three RBI, while third baseman Emily White went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.  McCoy also produced a two-hit game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Centerfielder Sara Lallier added a triple and a run scored.

Defensively, the Tornados provided McCoy with needed protection in the field.  BC did not commit an error in the contest while turning a double play.

Both teams remained hitless through the first two innings and scoreless through the first 3.5 innings.

However, Brevard came alive offensively in the bottom of the fourth inning.  White led off the frame with a double to deep centerfield. White then moved all the way to third on a bunt single by McCoy who then stole second to provide two baserunners in scoring position with no outs.  Cook promptly hit a two-run single to score both White and McCoy to break the early deadlock.

Later in the fourth, Jocelyn Folkers drew and walk then stole both second and third base.  Lauren Dowell then hit an infield single to score Folkers and give McCoy and the Tornados a 3-0 lead.

Cook delivered again in the fifth inning with an RBI single to again score White.

The Monarchs scored its lone run in the top of the sixth, however, BC delivered with another insurance run in the bottom of the frame as Lallier hit a triple then scored opportunistically on a passed ball.

After allowing a baserunner in the top of the seventh, McCoy then struck out two of the three batters she faced to close out the win

The first game of the doubleheader featured two-hit games by White and shortstop Olivia Pressley. However, the Tornados committed four errors while allowing five Monarch runs on six hits in the defeat.

Methodist led the opening game 1-0 in the first, but Brevard jumped ahead 2-1 in the second on a two-RBI single by Pressley that scored Folkers and Lallier.

The Tornados would be shut out for the final five innings of the game while Methodist regained the lead with a three-run third inning.

Brevard now heads to Tucson for four days of games beginning Tuesday vs. North Central (MN).
