Tornados Post Wins Over Mary Washington, PSU-Abington

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sara Lallier was responsible for three RBI and went 1-for-5 from the plate as Brevard earned a 9-7 victory over Mary Washington in the morning game of the Fastpitch Dreams Tournament.

Joining Lallier with solid outings for the Tornados, who picked up their second win of the season, were Ricki Kuhn (2-4, run) and Teegan Bullock (2-3, run). Kuhn was also responsible for the victory on the mound after logging 1.2 innings, scattering three hits and one walk while striking out two Eagle hitters.

Brevard fought back from a 2-0 deficit by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third. Jordan Hawk led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amber Hong. Two batters later, Paige Atkison moved Hawk to third and Emily White to second on a grounder to second.

With one out, Lallier delivered a base hit single that brought home Hawk and White for the first two Brevard runs.

The Tornados enjoyed their second two-run inning in the fourth which began with a leadoff single from Bullock. Hong drew a two-out walk, moving Bullock to second, as did White who loaded the bases for Atkison.

Atkison reached base on an error by Rachel Porchie, allowing Bullock and Hong to forge Brevard in front 4-2.

Mary Washington scored three runs over the next two innings, taking a 5-4 lead at the end of the fifth. Hawk led off the sixth with a pop up to right field, but Brevard followed with walks by Hong, White and Atkison to load the bases for Lallier.

Lallier reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Hong in the process, to bring the game to a five-all deadlock. Kuhn followed with a fielder's choice of her own, scoring White for the go-ahead run as she moved Traxler to third.

With two outs, Olivia Pauldin extended the inning with a grounder that resulted in an error at first, scoring Traxler for the seventh Tornado run. The final run of the inning crossed the plate when Kuhn scored a throwing error by right field Morgan Mumford, making for an 8-5 Brevard lead.

The Eagles responded with two runs in the home half of the sixth, trimming the deficit to one, but Brevard received a timely hit by White, which brought home Miller from third with one out in the inning.

GAME 2: BREVARD 7, PENN STATE-ABINGTON 6

The trio of Jordan Hawk (2-4, 2 RBI, run), Brittan Miller (2-3, RBI) and Paige Atkison (1-3, RBI) helped Brevard split the six games of the Fastpitch Dreams Tournament as the Tornados downed Penn State-Abington by a 7-6 margin.

Ricki Kuhn was credited with the win, holding Penn State-Abington to one run on four hits over three innings on the mound. She faced 13 batters and finished the game with one strikeout.

Brevard (3-3) put the first run on the board in the top of the first inning. Hawk opened the game with a single up the middle and advanced to second following a bunt by Amber Hong. Two batters later, Atkinson recorded the third hit of the frame, platting Hawk from second and moving Hong to third.

The Nittany Lions answered with three runs in the home half of the first, jumping in front 3-1. Olivia Presley got the Brevard offense going with a single up the middle and teammate Teegan Bullock followed with a single to move Presley into scoring position at second.

Miller singled through the left side of the infield, loading the bases for Hawk, who delivered a base hit to right field that scored Presley and Bullock in the process.

Penn State-Abington enjoyed its second multi-run inning of the game in the second, taking a 5-3 lead. Just as in the second, Brevard answered with two runs to bring the game to a five-all deadlock. Kuhn kept the inning alive with a single up the middle and Presley followed in the lineup with a base hit of her own.

An error at first allowed Bullock to reach base, moving Presley to third and plating Kuhn from second. Miller singled up the middle, allowing Presley to advance home as Brevard knotted the game at five.

Brevard took its second lead of the game in the top of the fifth. Kuhn was the first player to reach base for the Tornados, following an error at second. Two batters later, Bullock moved the lead runner to second and Miller reached with an error in right field. The error scored both Bullock and Caitlyn Cloud-Martin, who was pinch running for Kuhn, as Brevard forged in front 7-5.

Penn State scored one run in the sixth, but the Tornados held on for the one-run victory.

The Tornados return to action on Sunday when they host Maryville in a doubleheader scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Field.
